“You can take the boy out of the farm, but you can’t get the farm out of the boy.” Wayne Gustave Johnson explores this proverb as he recounts memories of his early years on an Iowa farm rented by his immigrant Swedish parents. Nourished by these gentle parents, a little church, eight years of country school, and four older siblings, Johnson established the values that shaped his life. The labor-intensive farming of the 1930s grounded him in the dignity of labor and the sense of fulfillment which comes through cooperation with nature. A little church of fundamentalist leanings nurtured his love of choral music and gave him respect for the support provided by religious faith. While his eight years of country schooling would not quite classify as prep school experience, they did provide a basic grasp of the three Rs. Sex education—of sorts—is inevitable on an Iowa farm where the romancing of farm animals is open to view. The transfer of these observed activities to human experience was natural, but required some fine-tuning. At thirteen, the death of his father prompted the author to eventually pursue the big questions through the study of religion and philosophy.

USS Iowa (BB-61) was the lead ship in one of the most famous classes of battleships ever commissioned into the US Navy. Transferred to the Pacific Fleet in 1944, the Iowa first fired her guns in anger in the Marshall Islands campaign, and sunk her first enemy ship, the Katori. The Iowa went on to serve across a number of pivotal Pacific War campaigns, including at the battles of the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf. The ship ended the war spending several months bombarding the Japanese Home Islands before the surrender in August 1945. After taking part in the Korea War, the Iowa was decommissioned in 1958, before being briefly reactivated in the 1980s as part of President Reagan's 600-Ship Navy Plan. After being decommissioned a second and final time in 1990, the Iowa is now a museum ship in Los Angeles. This new addition to the Anatomy of the Ship series is illustrated with contemporary photographs, scaled plans of the ship and hundreds of superb 3D illustrations which bring every detail of this historic battleship to life.

Weary from the journalistic treadmill of "going from one assignment to the next, like an itinerant fieldworker moving to his harvests" and healing from a divorce, Douglas Bauer decided it was time to return to his hometown. Back in Prairie City, he helped on his father's farm, scooped grains at the Co-op, and tended bar at the Cardinal. The resultant memoir is a classic picture of an adult experiencing one's childhood roots as a grown-up and testing whether one can ever truly go home again.
