Excerpt from The Irish Issue For any subject of England to aid America was, of course, treason against England. And the American Fathers, conscious of the consequences (if this crime, deemed it their duty to forbid the Island of Jamaica to incur the dangers of aiding the Revolution. The peculiar situation of your Island, said the Congressional Letter to the Jamaican Assembly, read on July 25, 1775. Excerpt from The New Birth of Ireland We hear, in fact, a great deal too much about Home Rule, and a great deal too little about the Irish Problem which, whether in London or Dublin, whether by Catholic or Protestant, calls for immediate attention on its own merits; for, broadly speaking,1 'the only things worth discussing in Ireland are the things which, for political reasons, the parties never discuss.' Excerpt from The Irish Question Everywhere I found the people very polite and court eons. Clergymen, landlords, tenants, laborers and busi ness men - representatives of all classes - talked freely of the troubles that were agitating the country. In some instances I have allowed these men to speak in these pages; in others have given their views in my own language. I desire to acknowledge the special courtesy shown me by Mr. Commissioner Vernon, who explained the practical working of the Land Act and gave me much valuable information besides; by Mr. H. A. Robinson, Local Government Inspector of Mayo and Galway, whose intimate knowledge of and sympathy with the poor people of those counties made his conversation extremely interesting and profitable; and by-dr. Neil son Hancock, whose familiarity with the statistics of Ireland is well known. The debates on Irish affairs in the House of Commons, which I was enabled through the kindness of Dr. Lyon Playfair to hear regularly while in London, gave me an excellent opportunity for studying the characteristics and relations of the men who have taken a leading part in these discussions; and I saw' their tactics in vigorous operation. Excerpt from The Irish Situation Five years have elapsed since the Easter Rising of 1916; six and a half since the outbreak of European War; eight since the formation of the Ulster Volunteer Force. These are the main marking points in the evolution which has transformed Ireland from a peaceful country into a theatre of operations for three armed forces, all differing in purpose and control; these milestones mark stages for Ireland on a new track of political development. But survey of the situation must begin a good deal farther back if it is to be intelligent, or intelligible to the general reader who has not closely followed Irish affairs. At the joining point between this century and the last the South African War furnished illustration of the permanent contradictions which characterise the relations between Ireland and Great Britain. Excerpt from The Irish Issue in Its American Aspect: A Contribution to the Settlement of Anglo-American During and After the Great War Ireland is the spectre of the British Empire. Sometimes she seems to fill the position of America's family ghost as well. Uncle Sam is far too good and young to be haunted as some of the European nations are haunted by the undying phantasms of those they oppressed. Only the picturesque wraith of the Red Indian broods upon the prairies of the West. If the American has pressed into other lands than his original colonies, it has always been to redeem and civilise, never to enslave persons or desecrate territory. No ghost came out of the Philippines to decry his record before the nations. His Cuban conscience is clean. The Queen of Hawaii, the pride of Spain, and the Pekin summer palace need never trouble his soul. The hazard of the world brought each into his way and he dealt with them severally, as a gentleman should under the circumstances. The American gentleman is so by national tradition rather than by individual birth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Story of the Irish Nation TO take in the full scope Of the Irish story you must climb to some similar height in imagination, some height from which narrow boundaries are released, and the prospect becomes emotionally open. TO find this emi nence, it is perhaps best to go back a few thousand years. Here it is no longer history, as we know it nationally and politically, that takes us by the hand. It is the much calmer genius of science. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Ireland in the Last Fifty Years Perhaps one may say that the Irish Question, as it has shown itself through the centuries, goes even deeper than politics and economics. It is the result of a clash of two ways of life. England early evolved the conception of the State. We may even say that England was the first heir Of Rome, among modern nations, in the transmission of that conception. But it is a conception which under, most of its forms - and there have been several - has failed to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Ireland and the Home Rule Movement The great tendency which has been so marked a feature of Irish life in the course of the last decade to turn the attention of the people towards efforts at self improvement and the development of self-reliance without regard to English aid, English neglect, or English Opinion, excellent though it has been in every other respect, has had this one drawback - that there has grown up a generation of Englishmen, well intentioned towards our country, to whom the problems of Irish Government are an unknown quantity. The ignorance of Irish affairs in England is due partly to ourselves, but also to a natural heed lessness arising from distance and preoccupation with problems with which Englishmen are more intimately concerned. Excerpt from The Cause of Ireland, Pleaded Before the Civilized World No Irish-American who has followed, with anything like a kindly interest, the sufferings and struggles of the Irish at home during the last fifty years, but must have asked himself if these sufferings were never to end, or if such struggles were, at length, to be crowned by the long-prayed-for success. Yes - we have been long waiting, in our free homes beyond the Atlantic, for the end of these awful trials, prolonged century after century down to the present year, and borne with a fortitude and a hopefulness, which speak more eloquently than inspired voice or pen for the heroic temper of the Irish soul. We have contributed by word and deed, as the trial deepened, and the struggle became ever fiercer, to soothe the suffering whose source we were powerless to remove, and to aid the brave men and true who were battling for the cause of the Martyr-Nation.
