Excerpt from The Irish Potato The work outlined in these bulletins is intended to give sug gestions and some definite direction for teaching children, both girls and boys, in the outlying rural districts something of the nature of food plants, their nutritive value and their proper preparation for human consumption. It is also desired that these lessons in cooking should be connected with the school lunches and that the children actually prepare daily a hot dish to supple ment the cold food brought from home. There are various ways in which this work can be placed on the school program. The subject dealt with can be divided into smaller topics, and one of these smaller divisions developed each day. Probably a better plan would be to devote Friday after noon to the work. The subject-matter can be carefully discussed and followed by an actual cooking lesson. The following week the class should be divided into groups and each group serve for a day during the forenoon. This group will prepare and cook in quantities large enough to serve those contributing to the food supplies, some special dish discussed or prepared at the Friday class suitable for the noon luncheon. The time spent in this can be arranged during the study hours and the noon recess by the teacher, so that it will not conflict with the regular school program. Excerpt from Blackleg: A Bacterial Disease of the Irish Potato The attacked plants are usually unthrifty, light green or even yellow, and undersized. The branches and leaves have a tendency to grow upward forming a rather compact top, often with the young leaves curled and folded up along the _mid - rib. The most characteristic thing about them is the inky black discoloration of the stem, at or below the surface of the ground, but frequently running up the stem from one to sev eral inches above ground. The seed - piece from which the attacked plants spring is invariably attacked with a soft-rot, and the disease appears to start on the stem at its junction with the diseased seed tuber. The germs of the disease are capable of causing a rapid decay of the young tubers, and these are sometimes attacked also. Pp. 312 - 314. Excerpt from The Influence of Copper Sprays on the Yield and Composition of Irish Potato Tubers In 1912 Lutman (32) published data from Vermont Showing that a greater yield of tubers was Obtained from Copper sprayed potato plants at various stages of growth than from the unsprayed plants. Plants which received a Pickering spray, a Bordeaux spray in which part of the copper sulphate had been replaced by Iron sulphate, and a commercial Spray containing copper also gave higher yields than the check plants. The increased yield seemed to be In proportion to the amount of copper present in the Spray. The application of a spray containing silver did not increase the yield. Lutman gested that the Bordeaux mixture acts as a stimulant, bringing about an increase in the quantity Of starch produced daily.
