"The sinking of the Lusitania, one of the most famous incidents in world history, occurred on 7 May 1915, off the Irish coast. Lusitania, an Irish Tragedy is the first book to pick up the narrative from the point of the sinking to tell the stories which surround this historic event." "The book highlights for the first time the heroic rescue work undertaken by Irish fishermen and lifeboats; it tells the tales of those who tended the dead and succoured the living, those who served on the coroner's jury, and those who worked as bodyhunters scouring the coast in response to rewards." "There is much more, including the stories of the numerous Irish passengers and crew who were aboard the doomed vessel. Here too is a thorough guide to the rich legacy of Lusitania graves in Ireland, and comprehensive information on the memorial, discovery, salvage and protection efforts carried out in the years since."--BOOK JACKET.

Riders To The Sea written by John Millington Synge and has been published by Lindhardt og Ringhof this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-12-13 with Drama categories.

‘Riders to the Sea’ (1904), is a classic one-act tragedy by famed Irish playwright J.M. Synge. Maurya, a widower of the Aran Islands who has lost her husband and five sons to the sea, is alarmed when she learns that her brother’s body has also washed up on the beaches of Donegal. Convinced that tragedy will befall her still, Maurya pleads with her only living son, Bartley, to not brave the tempestuous waters to journey to County Galway for business. When he does not listen, Maurya must only wait to see if her predictions will come true: that by night’s fall she will have no sons left... A heart-breaking drama that captures the beautiful lyricism of the Irish, ‘Riders to the Sea’ conveys colossal emotion in such a minute play. With riveting dialogue throughout, Synge explores the hopelessness of humanity in the face of nature. The futility of human life in ‘Riders to the Sea’ is echoed in other classic Irish plays like Samuel Beckett’s ‘Waiting for Godot’ (1953). With the timeless universality of its message, ‘Riders of the Sea’ is sure to find a home with modern audiences looking to experience one of the most profound tragedies of the 20th century. Edmund John Millington Synge (1871 – 1909) was an Irish poet, playwright, and defining figure of the Irish Literary Revival. Born in County Dublin to upper-middle-class Protestants, Synge suffered from Hodgkin’s disease which led to his home-schooling. Soon after graduating from Trinity College Dublin, Synge became a renowned poet and playwright, but his success was short-lived as he passed away from cancer at 37. He is best remembered for his play ‘The Playboy of the Western World’, an incredibly controversial work at the time of its publication and performance. Regarded by Yeats as ‘the greatest dramatic genius of Ireland’, Synge has held a lasting legacy, being a key influence for acclaimed Irish playwright Samuel Beckett and the subject of Joseph O’Connor’s novel ‘Ghost Light’ (2010).

Tragedy And Irish Literature written by R. McDonald and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-12-17 with Literary Criticism categories.

In Tragedy and Irish Literature, McDonald considers the culture of suffering, loss, and guilt in the work of J.M. Synge, Sean O'Casey and Samuel Beckett. He applies external ideas of tragedy to the three dramatists and also discerns particular sorts of tragedy within their own work. While alert to the real differences between the three writers, the book also traces common themes and preoccupations. It identifies a conflict between form and content, between heightened language and debased reality as the hallmark of Irish tragedy.

Famine Echoes is a groundbreaking oral account of the Great Irish Potato Famine of 1845–52, telling the stories of its victims for the first time ever in their own words and those of their descendants. 'When the potato crop failed no other food was available and the people perished by the hundreds of thousands, along the roadside, in the ditches, in the fields from hunger and cold, and what was even worse – the famine fever. The strongest men were reduced to mere skeletons and they could be met daily with the clothes hanging on them like ghosts.' The Great Irish Famine is the greatest tragedy in Irish history. Over one million people died and nearly two million emigrated as a result. Famine Echoes gives a voice to its victims, offering a unique perspective on the Great Hunger, the defining event of modern Irish history. In Famine Echoes, descendants of Famine survivors recall the community memories of the great hunger in their own words, conveying like never before the heartbreak and horrors their relatives experienced. This remarkable book, a seminal record of the oral transmission of folk memory, is a record of the last living link with the survivors of Ireland's most devastating historical event. In the 1940s, the Folklore Commission conducted interviews with thousands of elderly people around Ireland who remembered what they themselves had heard from ancestors who had survived the Famine. Cathal Póirtéir has edited a selection of these recollections, arranging the material in an order which follows the rough chronology of the Famine itself. Famine Echoes is published to coincide with the RTÉ Radio series of the same name. The Famine Plot written by Tim Pat Coogan and has been published by St. Martin's Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-27 with History categories.

During a Biblical seven years in the middle of the nineteenth century, Ireland experienced the worst disaster a nation could suffer. Fully a quarter of its citizens either perished from starvation or emigrated, with so many dying en route that it was said, "you can walk dry shod to America on their bodies." In this grand, sweeping narrative, Ireland''s best-known historian, Tim Pat Coogan, gives a fresh and comprehensive account of one of the darkest chapters in world history, arguing that Britain was in large part responsible for the extent of the national tragedy, and in fact engineered the food shortage in one of the earliest cases of ethnic cleansing. So strong was anti-Irish sentiment in the mainland that the English parliament referred to the famine as "God's lesson." Drawing on recently uncovered sources, and with the sharp eye of a seasoned historian, Coogan delivers fresh insights into the famine's causes, recounts its unspeakable events, and delves into the legacy of the "famine mentality" that followed immigrants across the Atlantic to the shores of the United States and had lasting effects on the population left behind. This is a broad, magisterial history of a tragedy that shook the nineteenth century and still impacts the worldwide Irish diaspora of nearly 80 million people today.
