Excerpt from Robert Louis Stevenson: As I Found Him in His Island Home Greater exertion than many who were apparently his superiors physically. His wonder ful will-power to accomplish whatever he undertook was noticeable when some self imposed task would be done that an ordinary person, in good health, would shrink from. He would plunge headlong into the work, whatever it might be, at the desk or climb ing over some untrodden part of the island, straining every nerve and muscle to keep pace with his thoughts. With his active brain he could give a dozen orders to as many different persons without even changing the tone of his voice, or he could sit quietly in his boat, apparently as unconscious as a native, waiting for the mail steamer to anchor and the side steps (gangway) to be lowered. At the first glance one would have thought him a tourist coming on board to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. On January the Fifth, 1888 - that is eleven months and four days after - my uncle, Edward Prendick, a private gentleman, who certainly went aboard the Lady Vain at Callao, and who had been considered drowned, was picked up in latitude 5 3' S. and longitude 101 W. in a small open boat of which the name was illegible, but which is supposed to have belonged to the missing schooner Ipecacuanha. Excerpt from The Island of Faith There New York that is bounded upon the north by Fourteenth Street, upon the south by Delancy. Folk who dwell in it seldom stray farther west than the Bowery, rarely cross the river that flows sluggishly on its eastern border. They live their lives out, with something that might be termed a feverish stolidity, in the dim crowded flats, and upon the thronged streets. To the people who have homes on Central Park West, to the frail winged moths who flutter up and down Broadway, this section does not exist. Its poor are not the picturesque poor of the city's Latin quarter, its criminals seldom win to the notoriety of a front page and inch-high headlines; it almost never produces a genius for the world to smile upon - its talent does not often break away from the undefined, but none the less certain, limits of the district. It is curious that this part of town is seldom featured in song or story, for it is certainly neither dull nor unproductive of plot. Excerpt from Jerry of the Islands It is a misfortune to some fiction writers that fiction and unveracity in the average person's mind mean one and the same thing. Several years ago I published a South Sea novel. The action was placed in the Solomon Islands. The action was praised by the critics and reviewers as a highly creditable effort of the imagination. As regards reality they said there wasn't any. Of course, as every one knew, kinky-haired cannibals no longer obtained on the earth's surface, much less ran around with nothing on, chopping off one another's heads, and, on occasion, a white man's head as well.
