“Superb… The first critical analysis of Israel written from within... It's a deliberate act of self-awareness, exploring how a people got where they are.” — Time “The most illuminating, even-handed, candid appraisal of the contemporary Jewish condition yet to appear” — Newsweek “[A] penetrating, profound, explosive essay-analysis of the Israelis and the Jews... Elon is that very rare writer of contemporary history who can sincerely and honestly see and sympathize with the irreconcilable forces of so suicidal a death-embrace as the Israeli-Arab struggle... a moving, enlightening, stimulating book... this book is a beacon.” — David Schoenbrun, The New York Times “Amos Elon should be praised... he has written the most acute, even-handed portrait yet of the perennially controversial Israelis... he has created a portrait that is as complex as it is palpable.” — Roger Jellinek, The New York Times “An instant bestseller in Hebrew, and in English from 1971, it became required reading in schools and mirrored the lives of Israelis.” — The Guardian “[A] superb book” — The Nation “Amos Elon’s The Israelis stands out as a uniquely valuable book” — Commentary Magazine

Born in Budapest to a well-to-do assimilated Jewish family, Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) and his family moved to Vienna when he was 18. He studied law before he began writing plays and pieces of journalism. Herzl became the Paris correspondent for Vienna’s leading newspaper, the Neue Freie Presse, and covered the Dreyfus affair, which shocked and galvanized him to write The Jewish State: An Attempt at a Modern Solution of the Jewish Question, published in 1896. After the first Zionist congress of 1897, Herzl wrote in his diary: “In Basel I founded the Jewish state. If I said this aloud today, I would be answered by universal laughter. Perhaps in five years, and certainly in fifty, everyone will agree.” “A great dramatic biography.” — Alfred Kazin, The New York Times “Any reader familiar with the sources can appreciate the brilliance, restraint and fidelity of Elon’s narrative... the excitement of events and the quality of their prime mover come through admirably.” — The New Republic “You could not put the book down without admiring Theodor Herzl’s courage and practical achievements — his romance turned into a Congress, a bank, a diplomacy.” — Bernard Avishai, The New Yorker “A quite astonishing portrait... positively rewarding” — Kirkus Reviews “Elon’s 1975 biography of Herzl... vividly portrayed the man with all his quirks, inventiveness and shortcomings” — Lawrence Joffe, The Guardian “considered one of the best biographies to date of Zionist founder Theodor Herzl” — Benjamin Spier, Jerusalem Post “arguably the best biography ever written of the founding father of Zionism, Theodore Herzl” — Tom Segev, Ha’aretz “A fascinating book ... it has the fascination of a novel on the grand scale.” — Arthur Miller, Washington Post “A skillfully written human look at the man whose life reads like a novel...” — Miami Herald

In this short biography of Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1744-1812), historian and journalist Amos Elon describes how the founder of the Rothschild dynasty started out by dealing in rare coins and traveling across Germany while still confined, as a Frankfurt Jew, to its Judengasse. Assisted by his five skilled sons, Rothschild subsequently built up a fortune by helping manage the investments of the Landgrave of Hesse, circumventing Napoleon’s blockade of England and funding Napoleon’s eventual defeat. “This slim, charming volume is actually a biographical essay, yet it succeeds in snatching its elusive subject from oblivion.” — Ron Chernow, The New York Times “This is a fascinating story.” — The New York Review of Books “A memorable first biography of a near-mythical founding father.” — Publishers Weekly “A thoroughly researched, fascinating, and altogether exemplary biography.” —Kirkus Reviews “Amos Elon’s portrait of the man who fathered a dynasty makes fascinating reading for anyone even mildly interested in money and power and their effects on history. Founder is a rich and colorful examination of [Meyer Amschel Rothschild]” — Morley Safer “Elon’s book... is a thoroughly researched and absorbing biography.” — St. Louis Jewish Light “A biography that’s a must read for today’s entrepreneurs.” — Houston Chronicle

Jerusalem City Of Mirrors written by Amos Elon and has been published by Plunkett Lake Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-08-15 with History categories.

A contemplation of the fabled city which for the Western mind is as much a myth as a physical reality. Amos Elon’s elegant, dazzling biography of Jerusalem gives a profound insight into the kaleidoscopic culture of this magical city. Battle-scarred from four thousand years of violent conflict, the holy city is a sacred symbol of Judaism, Islam and Christianity, and its religious wars of today reflect those of the past — Arab versus Jew, orthodox versus secular, continuity versus change. “[a] remarkable portrait of Jerusalem...” — Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, The New York Times “Jerusalem: City of Mirrors is a word portrait like none of those that have come before of the fabled city. It is from the loving but unsparing pen of Israel's most elegant iconoclast.” — Peter Grose, The New York Times “A brilliantly illuminating book.” — Philip Roth “Finely written and very readable... Elon’s contention, and convincing demonstration, that religious fanaticism and communal violence are deeply ingrained in Jerusalem’s geography and its long history (four thousand years) leave little hope for the ‘city of mirrors.’” — John C. Campbell, Foreign Affairs “Elon... has written a literary, and often lyrical, biography of the images of Jerusalem” — Roger Friedland and Richard Hecht, Los Angeles Times “Elon’s Jerusalem is both a learned book and a charming one... He places us before a veritable many-layered mountain of myth and history, a compressed symbol of our most sublime aspirations along with our most disgusting, hatefully brainless excursions into religious bigotry and fratricide. It is a book as complex and surprising as the city itself.” — Arthur Miller “A superbly readable study.” — Jewish Chronicle “A book which should be read by all.” — Catholic Herald “Jerusalem, the most longed-for and fought-for of all cities, is probably also the most written about. Yet, if I had to recommend one contemporary book about Jerusalem for everyone concerned with the city — both visitors and Jerusalemites — would certainly be this one.” — Dan Leon, Palestine-Israel Journal
