Excerpt from History of Modern Italian Art IN writing this book I trust that I have not taken a wholly one-sided view of my subject. I certainly have not been conscious of any wish either to de monstrate that the art-work of the period under con sideration was wholly good or that it was wholly bad. At the beginning I shared the feeling which we all have to some extent, that modern Italian art was degenerate, far removed in its standards and in its results from the art of the best period; but much study of the subject has led me to alter that view very materially. No one could have followed my line of work, step by step, without becoming convinced that the common feeling, to which I have alluded, was based to a certain extent upon prejudice and lack of information, and that a more generous attitude ought to be taken toward the men who, in the face of many discouragements, have so bravely struggled to redeem the art of the peninsula from the reproach which has been cast upon it. Excerpt from The Renaissance in Italian Art (Sculpture and Painting), Vol. 1 of 3: A Handbook for Students and Travellers They become interested in art, they' gain a certain knowledge of certain favourite painters, and there their progress remains; it is to this class, so large and so constantly increasing, in England, on the Continent, and in America, that this work appeals, because it presents a detailed, and yet, it is believed, a clearly-written and interesting account of the Italian schools, studied from that standpoint of evolution, which alone affords a chain of continued interest. In a work of this nature, which is thus essentially popular in its aim, a difficulty occurs in this fact, that points of more purely technical criticism, such, for instance, as the much - debated Rafaelle sketch book question (treated in Part III, Appendix) would affect the straightforward and simple character of the work, and yet in some cases can hardly be passed over. I have tried to meet this difficulty by treating them separately in the Appendix, which I will none the less commend to the reader's more careful interest. The work will consist of three parts, which will deal, speaking broadly, with the Florentine, Venetian, and Roman schools, though the lesser schools will find their place in the analysis. Excerpt from The Midsummer of Italian Art IN the first edition of Midsummer I stated that my Object was to provide a comprehensive account of the greatest Italian painters, which might serve both as a book Of reference for American travellers in Europe, and to revive the recollections Of what they had seen after their return. In revising my book I have consid ered the request Of my friends and critics for a more thorough and complete analysis of the works of Raphael and Michel Angelo, as the two artists in whom the pub lic takes the liveliest interest. I have also amended the account Of Leonardo da Vinci so as to introduce a state ment of every picture which can be ascribed to him on reasonable grounds. Certain additions have also been made to the account of Correggio, but the similarity of his designs makes a complete list of his paintings of less importance than the others. In order to make the book as perfect as possible, I have compared my previous statements with those of the most distinguished writers on the subject, and where I became satisfied that I was formerly in error I have made such changes as were necessary, giving credit to the proper authority in a foot-note. This applies, how ever, chiefly to the account of Raphael, and in a less degree to Leonardo and Correggio. There is no thor ough-going criticism of Michel Angelo's works that I can hear of, in any language, and my own statement would seem to be the first attempt in that direction.
