Many major problems - economic, social, political and religious - confronted the nation. All of these problems have a very vital bearing upon the progress of the Christian cause and some under standing of them is essential to any one who wishes to estimate correctly the present status of the Church in the Sunrise Kingdom. It is a matter of congratulation that so many Christian leaders, both missionary and Japanese, have sensed the dire need of Japan and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit are contributing towards the solution of many vexing problems. The first Christian Social Conference was held in Tokyo in the summer of 1929. In order to preserve for permanent record some of the findings of that conference, three of the most valuable papers have been included in this volume. Attention of the readers in Japan should also be called to the directory of Christian Social activities which has been most carefully compiled by Miss Mildred A. Paine. The editor-in-chief hereby completes his third term as editor of the Japan Mission Year Book. To all who have so generously contributed of their labor and time to the making of the last three volumes of the Year Book we again extend our sincere gratitude. Excerpt from The Japan Christian Year-Book: Continuing the Japan Mission Year Book Being the Thirty Second Issue of the Christian Movement in Japan and Formosa Issued by the Federation of Christian Missions in Japan in Cooperation With the National Christian Council The 1934 Japan Christian Year Book is presented to the public with a very keen feeling on the part of the Editors that Japan is now passing through a period of unusual importance domestically and as one of the great powers of the world. The present atmosphere of "crisis," which is so sharply and generally felt throughout Japan, both by the Japanee people and by foreigners in the country, affects almost every phase of life. In planning this Year Book the Editors and the Editorial Committee have attempted to deal with this. The other theme which is prominent in this Year Book is the attention which is called to the unfinished task in Japan. Japan is powerful and fast becoming highly civilized, but power and "civilization" do not necessarily mean Christian. Those interested in Japan would do well to refer to the Year Book (Nenkan) published in Japanese under the auspices of the National Christian Council. This book contains a great quantity of valuable information regarding the Christian Movement in Japan. It should be noted, however, that since the Nenkan appears in December, the period covered is somewhat different from that under review in this Year Book.
