Excerpt from The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1886, Vol. 6: Containing the Official Record of Its Proceedings, and the Reports and Papers Presented in the Several Sections Three years ago, small-pox broke out in a lumber camp, but a few miles from where I reside. Nine teen persons had it, and one died. At the same time, and in an immediate neighborhood, scarlet fever made its appearance, with a total of twelve cases, and five deaths. The people of the country, for miles around, were excited and alarmed about the small-pox, but paid little or no attention to the scarlet fever. But a few weeks since, in the same neighborhood, diphtheria was introduced into a family of eight children, and while six of the children died, the disease was not allowed to spread beyond that family. Its presence was immediately reported to the local health officer and to the State Board of Health. The house was placarded, and quarantined, and every precaution taken to keep the disease within its original limits; and while mourning continues in that household, the community is saved from the further spread of that most fearful scourge. Excerpt from The Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol. 35: October 6, 1900-December 29, 1900 A conjunctival flap was made in twelve cases, but there was so frequently a hemorrhage which obscured the field of operation that I have not lately used it save when accidentally made. In a large majority of cases the knife has, just before the completion of the section, been turned outward and the exit made in clear cornea about one millimeter from the sclerocorneal margin. Although such a section, it is stated, is more likely to entangle the iris and more liable to primary or second ary infection, it has not proved so in my experience. I have found the flap to close accurately, prolapse of the iris has been less frequent and I have seen no reason to discard the practice save that it is not advised in the books. After the corneal section I remove the speculum, and make the cystotomy while holding the upper lid by pressure over the orbital arch. My losses of vitreous seven cases - all occurred with the speculum in place. The accident has not occurred when the lid has been held. Excerpt from The Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol. 46: April 7, 1906 Kronlein, in 1902, reported 50 radical operations, with.14 deaths, 28 per cent. At the time of the report 22 patients were living, 4 three years and upward, 7 more than 2 years and 13 more than 1 year. Mikulicz, in 1901, reported 100 stomach resections, with 37 deaths, 58 of those who recovered were traced. Seventeen were alive more than 1 year, 10 more than 2 years, and 4 more than years. Dr. Chas. H. Mayo and I have resected the stomach 100 times, with 14 deaths, 14 per cent. This includes every case dying in the hospital, 5 after 3 weeks and 2 after more than 1 month; In the last 63 cases, begin ning with Jan. 1, 1904, there were 6 deaths, per cent., and in this group there were 25 consecutive cases, with but 1 death.
