What are the things that bring joy to a Christian? Certainly one of them is the knowledge that he is saved and will spend eternity in heaven with God. Another is reading God's Word regularly. Psalm 119:11 says, "Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart." Reading the Bible should bring joy to a Christian every day of his life. Why? Because God is revealed in the Bible. Reading the Bible gives Christians a greater appreciation of the love God has for us, the promises He has made to us, and the glorious eternity He has prepared for us. And nowhere are these Truths more evident than in the New Testament, the portion of the Bible which tells us about the New Covenant God has made with mankind through the blood of Jesus Christ. Yet for many Christians the Bible is a difficult book to read. Quoting from "The Joy of the New Covenant," "Many people approach the Bible just like they approach any other book: they skim a few pages to see if they get 'hooked, ' and maybe jump around to several different sections. But they soon discover that the Bible doesn't read like their favorite novel, and it contains a message that is at odds with the world. So they lose interest and don't read it very often." Christians should never be put off by the Bible. One thing they can do to help them understand it is read supplemental books that talk about the Bible. "The Joy of the New Covenant" is just such a book. It is a book of over 200 devotionals aimed at explaining the major points of the New Testament. Each devotional contains a message built on one or more New Testament passages. The message explains the meaning of the passage and, where appropriate, challenges the readers to apply the passage in their lives. Other messages point out how blessed Christians are that the statements God made in the passage are true. The topics covered in "The Joy of the New Covenant" include the major points of Christian theology. The very first message focuses on the divinity of Jesus, emphasizing that He was not just an ordinary man but was and is the Son of God who came to earth and lived as a man. The second message describes how human Jesus was while He was on earth, even though He was also God. Additional topics include salvation by faith apart from works, the Holy Trinity, the parables of Jesus, prayer, the Lord's Prayer, the Beatitudes and other teachings from the Sermon on the Mount, the twelve disciples, the life and major teachings of Paul, election, spiritual gifts, family relationships, heaven, angels and demons, and the seven letters to the churches in Asia. The book also includes messages on the coming Rapture, the Tribulation, signs of the end times, Jesus' 1000 year reign, and eternity. The final message in the book challenges the reader to select a life verse from a list of key Bible verses. "The Joy of the New Covenant" addresses many of the hard questions of Christianity-questions like: ? *Why does God allow Christians to suffer? *How are God's election and man's free choice reconciled? *Can salvation be lost? *Why does the Lord's Prayer tell us to ask for forgiveness when Christians are already forgiven? *Since God predestined Jesus to die on the cross, can Judas be held accountable for betraying Jesus? *What is the "unpardonable sin" Jesus mentioned in Matthew 12? *What is God's position on Christians having wealth? The book attempts to answer all of these questions and others, but at the same time recognizes that God does not always reveal the reasons for His actions and commandments. While no book should ever be used as a substitute for the Bible, "The Joy of the New Covenant" supplements the Bible by giving the reader a greater understanding of the New Testament. This understanding will bring joy to any Christian.

A heavy burden of despair weighed down the world into which Jesus was born. But his advent brought a “conquering, newborn joy” which finds expression in Christian experience and theology. “From beginning to end,” says William Morrice in this book, “the message of the New Testament is one of joy: for it declares the ‘good news’ of the Christian gospel.” Morrice here focuses on the various words used in the New Testament to express the joy that comes from belief in the Good News of Jesus Christ. He shows how the New Testament contains a rich profusion of words reflecting aspects of Christian joy. In addition, he examines the distinctive contribution made by each writer and within each group of New Testament books. “Today,” writes A.M. Hunter in his Foreword, “when we live in a modern world where men’s hearts again fail them for fear of what may be in store for mankind, Dr. Morrice’s book is a rousing recall of that radiant optimism which began with the coming of Christ and which fills the pages of the New Testament.”

In this accessible and erudite commentary, the respected New Testament scholar Linda Belleville shows how Paul’s letter to the Philippians provides a unique opportunity to see the similarities between the culture of his day and ours and to understand not only what is needed to cope in a hostile society but also to be bold in sharing the sole hope for our global world: knowing Christ and eternal citizenship in heaven. Philippians was written while Paul was imprisoned in the imperial barracks, awaiting the outcome of a life-or-death trial. His most beloved church was facing strong opponents without and selfish division within. Paul’s strategy is to remind the church of the reasons to rejoice and forgo selfish opinion differences. There is much cause to rejoice because, despite imprisonment, the gospel had reached the entire imperial guard and emboldened Christians everywhere to boldly proclaim Christ; even if he dies, Paul’s ministry of preaching Christ will continue. Yet the Philippians’ best exemplar is Christ himself, who, while enjoying his heavenly riches, willingly took on the human condition with its pain, suffering, and death so that they might gain their own heavenly riches.

Wade Burleson shows how much of what passes for organized Christianity today is simply a minor modification of the Old Covenant agreement God had with Israel, an agreement the writer of Hebrews called "obsolete and outdated." The reason many followers of Jesus lack the freedom and joy the New Testament promises is because Christians have little understanding that the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ ended the Old Covenant, and established a RADICALLY NEW agreement between God and sinners. Wade Burleson shows how there can be incredible freedom and abiding joy from resting in God's love for us through Christ's performance and obedience for us. When we focus on God's immeasurable for us in Christ Jesus, we can avoid finding our satisfaction and happiness in life through measuring how good we are through our religious performance and activity on behalf of God or the institutional church.

In Hebrews the New Covenant concept is the key to the author's hermeneutical scheme. When the New Covenant in Hebrews is compared with the same idea in the Dead Sea Scrolls, in Paul and in the Last Supper accounts, the independence and originality of the author of Hebrews become evident. His cultic reinterpretation of the New Covenant concept allows him to depict the Christ event in continuity with its Levitical heritage, through the shared rubrics of high priest, bloody sacrifice and tent. His simultaneous stress on the new, heavenly character of the New Covenant is designed to convince his readers of its surpassing effectiveness and definitive superiority.

What Jesus Christ did at the cross is what formulated the new covenant and made it a viable force. In this revelatory book, Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart takes his readers from the law given at Mount Sinai to the grace of Calvary’s cross. Though many in the church today still see Him as the law-giver, this Bible-based book shows the Lord Jesus Christ as the forgiver of sins, the Saviour of the world, and the very person of the new covenant. Believers who dare to follow the new covenant and all of its teachings will reap God’s blessing, His favor, and everlasting victory.

A practical understanding of the new covenant is important to each believer. The apostle Paul wrote an entire letter to the church at Galatia because the church was preoccupied with a mixture of the new and old covenants and he warned that this was becoming a real problem. In fact, he referred to this perversion as “another gospel” in Gal 1:6. The devil would like nothing more than to water down Christianity by addition and subtraction to rob the Christian of his joy and his freedom (Galatians 5:1). This work is intended to help believers understand the dynamics of the new covenant as Jesus taught them through John’s Gospel and other Scriptures. The transition from the old covenant to the new covenant was a real struggle for the first century church as evidenced by the first church council in Jerusalem (Acts 15). Just as the Apostle Peter had difficulty with it, this struggle continues today through many different movements which undermine the purity of the gospel of grace and cause great division within the church. Having a firm grasp of the important dynamics of the new covenant allows us to discern when the devil tries to pervert the truth and helps bring believers into the abundant life that Jesus had intended each believer to experience!
