Hinduism cannot be understood without the Great Goddess and the goddess-orientated Śākta traditions. The Goddess pervades Hinduism at all levels, from aniconic village deities to high-caste pan-Hindu goddesses to esoteric, tantric goddesses. Nevertheless, the highly influential tantric forms of South Asian goddess worship have only recently begun to draw scholarly attention. This book addresses the increasing interest in the Great Goddess and the tantric traditions of India by exploring the history, doctrine and practices of the Śākta tantric traditions. The highly influential tantric forms of South Asian goddess worship form a major part of what is known as ‘Śāktism’, and is often considered one of the major branches of Hinduism next to Śaivism, Vaiṣṇavism and Smārtism. This dictionary describes Tocharian A, one of two Tocharian languages documented in manuscripts of Buddhist texts from the second half of the 1st millennium CE, excavated in the oases of the Tarim basin. The dictionary contains also a thesaurus, based on all the identified texts in Tocharian A, including previously published and unpublished texts from various collections (Paris, Berlin). All forms of words, including variants occurring in the texts, are listed separately with reference to all occurrences and a sample of passages in transcription and translation. The meaning of a number of words has been better defined and, when necessary, corrected against previous glossaries. Much focus has been laid on phraseology and literary parallels with other Buddhist texts in Sanskrit and Uighur. The description of the verbal forms has been listed according to the stems of the paradigms. The sources of loanwords, e.g., from Tocharian B, Old and Middle Indo-Aryan, Iranian, Old Turkic, and Chinese, as well as the corresponding words in Tocharian B, are also given.

The book on which this commentary is written is titled 'History and Philosophy of Liṅgᾱyat Religion' by M. R. Sakhare, M. A., T. D. (Cantab), published by the Karnatak University, Dharwad, India, in the year 1978. During the process of continued study and understanding of the available sacred literature, and writing ten books in the past, it was evident to me that I had referred to a book by Professor M. R. Sakhare called 'History and Philosophy of Liṅgᾱyat Religion' published by Karnatak University, Dharwad, India. It appears that this scholarly work, in English, of Professor Sakhare was frequently referred to in the past by the students of Philosophy and Religion in order to seek further insight into the Religious Philosophy of Liṅgᾱyatas who are also known as Vīraśaivas. Although the book had been regarded as one of the authentic works in English on this subject, some questions have been raised as to its usefulness as a reference book in the present day circumstances. With this in mind, the book was reviewed, and then, as it seemed appropriate to report the findings, this commentary has been submitted to the interested and concerned readers. This is a critical review.
