Excerpt from The King of the Mountains Sir, said he in French, but with a deplora ble accent, my name is Hermann Schultz; I have just passed some months in Greece, and your book has been with me in all my travels. This exordium penetrated my heart with a pla cid joy; the voice Of the stranger appeared to me more melodious than the music of Mozart, and I directed towards his gold spectacles a look sparkling with gratitude. You cannot think, dear reader, how much we love those who have taken the trouble to peruse our scribblings. For my part, if I have ever desired to be rich, it is for the sake of securing good incomes to all those persons who have read my works. Excerpt from The King of the Mountains: Translated From the French Edmond About visited Greece in 1851. He seems to have set out with school-boy and Byronic ideas of Greece, and to have been disappointed. He found that the women were plain, that the classic Ilissus was "a little damp when it rains," that there was, and could be, no Hellenic aristocracy. A generation earlier, every one, in the spirit of egalite, had been equally drubbed by the Turks, and an aristocracy cannot be made out of such materials. He admitted, in contradiction of a German theory, that the modern Greeks are not Slavs, but he had little else that was good to say for them. Even Greek courage is "prudent and reflective"; Canaris is a rare exception. Greek love of liberty is mere hatred of order: Greek equality is mere jealousy. "This important person is a traitor, the other a thief; the next suborns murder: the purest have infamous morals. No Greek is esteemed in Greece." Excerpt from The Mountain All literature seems but the record of blunders, more or less flagrant and pitiable, of the thought trying to get the fatal word. How, then, shall a preface tell the main design of a book, essay, or discourse, when most books, essays, and discourses fail to tell it themselves, or succeed but lamely? A preface is often a simple Oyez! To the world, admonishing all persons that there is something for sale in the shape of intellectual merchandise, of which it affects to be a more or less perfect invoice. More generally the preface appears a forlorn and scraggy creation, in the form of a supplication to the reader to have faith and go on, to screw up his courage to wade through the coming revelation, it may be of chaos and night, of heaviness and sleep; with a solemn assurance that his threshing shall not be of straw alone, but that the winnowing thereof will give some grains of wheat. Excerpt from King's Mountain and Its Heroes: History of the Battle of King's Mountain, October 7th, 1780, and the Events Which Led to It This worthy King's Mountain Centennial very naturally excited much interest in the minds of the public regarding the battle itself, and its heroic actors, and prompted the writer to set about the preparation of his long-promised work. Beside the materials collected in former years - ia ante bellum days - more than a thousand letters were written. Seeking documents, traditions, description of historic localities, and the elucidation of obscure statements. Old newspaper files of the Library of Congress, Philadelphia Library Company, and of the Maryland and the Wisconsin Historical Societies, have been carefully consulted, and information sought from every possible source in this country, England and the British Colonies. Truth alone has been the writer's aim, and conclusions reached without prejudice, fear or favor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Many happy hours, which I have spent in your town, have endeared it to my memory, and though, being a young man, I am not yet entitled to my hobby, I declare if ever I should attain a good old age, and arrive at years of hobbyism, I shall choose for mine, the remembrance of the elegance, and the good-fellowship of Liverpool.
