He seemed, however, to be a personage perfectly. Well able to defend his own, being not. Much short 'of six feet in height; and though somewhat thin, extremely muscular, with long bony arms and a wide deep chest. His fore head was high and open, ' and his eye frank and clear, having withal some shrewdness in its quick twinkle. Excerpt from English Local Government: The Story of the King's Highway AT the beginning of the year 1913 the Story of the King's H ighway - an account of how, in England and Wales, the roads have actually been made and managed, from the earliest times down to the present day - may claim a certain topical interest. The advent on the roads of the automobile and the motor omnibus is producing effects, both on public opinion and on adminis tration, which are curiously parallel to those produced, three centuries ago, by the coming in of the carriage and the waggon. The New Users of the roads in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, whose aggressions on the pedestrians and on the road surface were made the subject of persistent complaint in their day, are now themselves resenting the quite analogous aggres sions of the New Users of the roads in the twentieth century. A hundred years ago, as our eighth chapter relates, the country was saved by Pontifex Maximus Telford and Macadam the Magician. We do not find ourselves able to foretell the name of our twentieth-century deliverer, nor even the message that he will bring, or the office that he will hold! Peabody, through the missionary centers of the Far East. We went out, not in the service of any one Board, but quite independently and at our own charges in order to be the better prepared to do the work which we had undertaken. We were accompanied by our daughters, and had the pleasure and benefit of seeing missionary work through the eyes of two alert college girls. Acknowledgment is made of the unfailing courtesy and boundless hospitality of the Missionaries of every denomination. They received us into their homes, met us at railway stations in the middle of the night, accompanied us on our journey, helped us through the intricacies of foreign travel, arranged scientifically planned itineraries for us, and showed us a wealth of Christian fellowship far beyond our poor deserving. The limitations of a study book, and the necessity of presenting general outlines forbid the telling of the stories so full of interest with which each station abounded.
