Excerpt from The Labor Side of the Great Sugar Question The American people have, during the past year, heard much about frauds, adulteration, &c., in connection with the importation and refining of sugar. Charges have been made over and over again, maliciously, by designing and interested parties. These charges have, in every single instance, been made anonymously in the press. The makers of these charges have never had the manliness to make them specific - to mention the names of those so accused by them - and thus place themselves within the reach of law. They were and are afraid to do this. The object they had in view was to make the public believe that certain importers and refiners of sugar were cheats and adulterators - public enemies - create a public opinion hostile to them, and by the pressure of that opinion force the hand of Congress and the Senate to frame the tariff for which they have been all along plotting. The following pages are the answer to these charges. In them will be seen who the accusers are; what are their arguments, what their aims, and what would be the results of their success to one of the greatest industries on this continent. The facts stated in these pages can be replied upon as true. Now that the public has the facts, let the public judge! Excerpt from The Labor Question No sweeping statements can be justly made about existing relations between employers and employed. In many cases they are all that they ought to be. Among employers of labor there are tens of thousands of just-minded, honorable men and women who govern themselves in all their dealings with those who work for them by the Golden Rule; and among wage-workers there are hundreds of thousands of honest and faithful men and women who render cheerful and efficient service to those who employ them. Excerpt from The Labor Question in Its Economic and Christian Aspects Hence it is one of those natural laws, which it is not in the power of-man, or combinations of men, to alter or abrogate, that labor is absolutely dependent on capital, in some amount at least, for its very possibility'and sustentation and in still larger and ever increasing ratios for its success and rewards. Capital is the natural ally, support, and coadjutor of labor. It can notbe otherw1se, except in distempered misconceptions, or through some strange and monstrous mal-adjustment. Excerpt from The Labor Problem: Plain Questions and Practical Answers Political economy furnishes a most telling illustration of the advantages of co-operation. The science has grown to such dimensions that even the specialist can scarcely mas ter the whole of it, while few can hope to be original in vestigators in every department of this growing branch of learning. There was a time when even the dilettante in economics could, on short notice, venture to prepare a text book Of political economy, but such a person will now turn away from the task, provided he has any regard for his future reputation. The late Stanley Jevons, profoundly impressed with the vastness of the work of the political economist, urged the necessity of the establishment of sev eral chairs of economics in every great university, because he thought the science too large for any one professor. It will readily be admitted from all this that it is hardly reasonable to expect a single author to write a satisfactory economic treatise; and, as a matter of fact, the only text book of political economy which presents the science as it is today, is the great work edited by sch'onberg, and writ ten by more than twenty of the most distinguished econ omists of our timef.
