Due to circumstances beyond their control, some of the O'Kelleher cousins landed in Boston, while the other cousins ended up in New Orleans. With the promise of a better life, and seeking the many opportunities that America offered its immigrants, the O'Kelleher family fought the prejudices of the entrenched Protestant majority in the north, and through their own devices, sacrifice, and hard work, they became successful Irish-Americans. The Irish-Catholic cousins who landed in Louisiana by mistake encountered no such prejudices, as the citizens of Louisiana were largely Catholic, as their French and Spanish ancestors had been. A cruel fate, however, would bring some of them together as enemies in a national conflict, where family members would find themselves on opposite sides of the great Civil War. Unimaginable horrors, plus the utter savagery of this conflict between the Blue and the Gray, would pit cousin against cousin. All were related by blood, but separated by a way of life. Time would heal these wounds, and peace would find the O'Kelleher's seeking a better way of life in the vast and dangerous New Mexican frontier.

For every female suicide in Ireland, there are five male suicides. This book is based on fieldwork done in and around Cork, Ireland between 2008 and 2012 among some forty young lads, aged 18-34. This anthropological approach aims to help explain why some groups in a specific society or community are more prone to commit suicide than others. In addition to suicide, this book focuses extensively on related issues such as alcohol, drug abuse, and other self-destructive behaviors prominent within Irish lad culture. This includes peer pressures and loyalties, chauvinistic jargon, homophobic bullying, humor, and the culture of mocking so as to grasp the cultural expectations of this particular form of masculinity. The everyday workings of gender segregation and gender-appropriateness is examined in detail by informants while addressing the underlying question whether increased gender equality—which includes men—could lessen young men's vulnerability to self-destructive behaviors and suicide in Ireland.

Lads written by Dave Itzkoff and has been published by Villard this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-09-07 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

"What I wanted after college was a job and my own apartment, but what I needed was a good comeuppance, and that’s what I got." When Dave Itzkoff graduated from Princeton in 1998–the first member of his family to earn a college degree–he expected to be rewarded with a career, and a life, that mattered. Instead, he ended up convinced that he was selling the entire institution of manhood down the river. After a series of personal and professional experiences stripped him of any lingering sense of entitlement, Itzkoff found himself working as an editor at Maxim, the pugnacious frontrunner in a new breed of men’s periodicals dubbed "lad magazines." There, he was initiated into a culture of heavily retouched girlie pictorials, dirty jokes, disingenuous sex advice, and shopping guides for expensive electronic gadgetry. And as Maxim continued its inexorable rise to become the most successful men’s magazine in modern publishing history, Itzkoff was left wondering what his work–and his life–really meant. Lads is the hilarious, heartbreaking story of Dave Itzkoff's efforts to define himself as a man while working at a magazine that was purveying a vision of young manhood–a state of perpetual adolescence–that was seductive to all but viable for none. Lads takes us deep inside one young man’s struggle with identity, responsibility, and sexuality, in an unsparingly candid account of how men really relate to one another, as fathers and sons, as employers and employees, as colleagues and friends. Lads is trenchant. Lads is perceptive. Lads is alarmingly funny. This is an unforgettable debut from a young writer of astounding talent.

It is estimated that around 50,000 Brigade Lads served in the First World War, during which many honors and distinctions were awarded. The Brigade contributed two Service Battalions of the King's Royal Rifle Corps whose members were comprised entirely of past and present members of the Church Lads' Brigade. These were known as ‘Pals’ Battalions. The story of the battalion centers around the experiences of eight men who served and some who died in the Battles of The Somme, Arras and The Lys. In the latter half of the nineteenth century influential Christians were worried about the poor spiritual and physical development of young people. It was at that time that ‘Brigade’ groups began to spring up all over the UK. Walter Mallock Gee, who was Secretary of the Junior Branch of the Church of England Temperance Society and a ‘Volunteer’ Army Officer, founded the Church Lads’ Brigade in 1891. By 1908 the membership of the brigade stood at about 70,000 in 1,300 companies. When the ‘Call to Arms’ came from Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener in 1914, thousands of Britain’s youth flocked to join the armed forces. Members of the Church Lads’ Brigade joined up in their droves at recruiting stations all over Great Britain. Two Battalions were formed entirely from serving and ex-members of the Church Lad’s Brigade. The 16th (Service) Battalion and later the 19th (Service) Battalion, both sponsored by the Church Lads’ Brigade, became known as ‘The Churchmen’s Battalion’. In 1914 no one could have imagined the horrendous stories that would unfold from the bloody massacre at so many notorious battles across Belgium and the fields of Flanders. Ypres, Passchendale, Somme, Arras, Lys, and the brutal decimation of the battalion during the hell of the fighting at High Wood. No one could have imagined the discomfort and disease brought on by living in a trench full of water for days on end, or ‘over the top’ through acres of knee-high mud. More than 24 of the Church Lads’ Brigade were awarded a Victoria Cross for their bravery, but by 1918 many of those gallant young Lads would not return home. This is their story.
