Introduction.--Bhagavan at Sravasti--his followers--is absorbed in Samadhi--Devaputras request him to recite the Lalita-Vistara--its contents--Bodhisattvas and S'ravakas solicit Bhagavan to recite the same--Bhagavan vouchsafes their request. Om I1 Salutation to all Buddhas,2 Bodhisattvas, A'ryas, S'ravakas and Pratyeka Buddhas3 of all times, past, present and future; who are adored throughout the farthest limitless boundary of the ten quarters of the globe (Lokadhalu). It has thus been heard by me,5 that once on a time Bhagavan6 sojourned in the garden of Anathapixdada at Jetavana in S'ravasti?, accompanied by a venerable body of twelve thousand Bhikshukas8 who had the following for their foremost; namely;--Jnana-kaundilya,9 As'vajit, Vashpa, Mahanama, Bhadrika, Y?='odeva, Vimala, Subahu, Purna,10 Gavampati, Uruvilla-kas yapa, Nadi-kas'yapa, Gaya-kas'yapa, S'ariputra,11 Maha-maudgalyayana, Maha-kas'yapa, Maha-katyayana, Kaphila, Kaundilya, Chunanda, Maitrayaniputra, Aniruddha, Nandika, Kasphila, Subhuti, Reveta, Khadiravanika, Amogharaja, Mahaparanika, Kakkula, Nanda, Rahula,12 Sviigata, and Ananda.13 There likewise accompanied him thirty-two thousand Bodhisattvas,14 all linked together by unity of caste,15 and perfect in the virtues of Bodhisattva Pdramitd;16 who had made their command over Bodhisattva knowledge a pastime, were illumined with the light of Bodhisattva Dharanis,17 and were masters of the Dharanis themselves; who were profound in their Bodhisattva meditations, allsubmissive to the lord of Bodhisattvas, and possessed of absolute control over Samddhi;M--great in self-command, refulgent in Bodhisattva forbearance, and replete with the Bodhisattva element of perfection.19...
