Excerpt from Natal: The Land and Its Story Colonies, and it is only within the last twenty years that British statesmen began fully to realise their size and importance. With the appointment of Mr Chamberlain as Secretary of State for the Colonies a new era began for the Greater Britains overseas. He recognised that instead of being a burden to the Empire they added to its power and security, and he has done his utmost to further their prosperity, and to strengthen the ties which, bind them to each other and to the mother country. The Colonial subjects of the King are widely scattered, but loyalty to his person and throne, pride in the achievements of the race, and brotherly feeling for their kinsfolk now dominate them all. The readiness with which all the great Colonies sent soldiers to the war in South Africa is a splendid proof of the Imperial sentiment which prevails throughout a united Empire. Never before has the story of Chicagoland's great southwest side been told in such a sweeping manner. This book contains the only history of the Belt railroad yards, the giant Clearing Industrial District, Midway Airport and many other subjects too numerous to mention in such a short space. More important yet are the stories of the Indians and settlers, the aviators and industrialists and the ordinary people who have made Clearing what it is today. "A Little Known Story of the Land Called Clearing" is the end product of twenty years of research by local author Robert Hill whose grandfather arrived in 1909 and opened the first hardware store in the community. Originally published in a limited quantity in 1983, this treasure trove of local Chicagoland history has been reissued and updated by permission of the Hill family. Now the generations to come will learn the history of a land called Clearing.

Water In A Dry Land written by Margaret Somerville and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-02-15 with Social Science categories.

Water in a Dry Land is a story of research about water as a source of personal and cultural meaning. The site of this exploration is the iconic river system which forms the networks of natural and human landscapes of the Murray-Darling Basin, Australia. In the current geological era of human induced climate change, the desperate plight of the system of waterways has become an international phenomenon, a symbol of the unsustainable ways we relate to water globally. The Murray-Darling Basin extends west of the Great Dividing Range that separates the densely populated east coast of Australia from the sparsely populated inland. Aboriginal peoples continue to inhabit the waterways of the great artesian basin and pass on their cultural stories and practices of water, albeit in changing forms. A key question informing the book is: What can we learn about water from the oldest continuing culture inhabiting the world’s driest continent? In the process of responding to this question a team of Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers formed to work together in a contact zone of cultural difference within an emergent arts-based ethnography. Photo essays of the artworks and their landscapes offer a visual accompaniment to the text on the Routledge Innovative Ethnography Series website, http://www.innovativeethnographies.net/. This book is perfect for courses in environmental sociology, environmental anthropology, and qualitative methods.
