It assembles news and analysis on corruption and the fight against it around the world, highlighting international and regional trends, and significant instances of reform. It also reveals the links between global, regional and national developments in the corruption field, and does so from the independent perspective of an NGO. The book includes reports by leading experts on topical issues such as political party funding, money laundering, and corruption in international sport, exploring in particular the global nature of these themes. It also contains 12 regionally-focused reports, written by journalists from around the world. The report's final data and research section delivers a unique survey of the contemporary corruption and anti-corruption research terrain, with contributions from a range of IGOs, NGOs, the private sector, and academics. It also contains TI's own well-known Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI). The Global Corruption Report is a "must have" publication for policy-makers, business people, lawyers, journalists, academics, and anti-corruption activists the world over.

"India's constitution protects the right to peaceful expression and its courts have issued numerous decisions that are protective of the right. However governments at both the national and state level persist in using harsh laws, many of them relics of the colonial era, to criminalize peaceful expression and arrest critics. While some prosecutions, in the end, have been dismissed or abandoned, many people who have engaged in nothing more than peaceful criticism have been arrested, held in pre-trial detention, and forced to defend themselves in costly criminal proceedings. Fear of such actions has led others to engage in self-censorship. In 2016 there has been a spike in the number of sedition cases filed nationwide. Human Rights Watch calls on the Indian government to drop all pending charges and investigations against those who are facing prosecution for the exercise of their right to freedom of expression, halt the abuse of the legal process and detain critics, and amend or repeal relevant laws to bring them into line with international human rights standards"--Page [4] of cover.

In Indian Cinema in the Time of Celluloid, Ashish Rajadhyaksha argues that any exploration of the social uses to which cinema is put in a place like India can only make sense if it transforms our understanding of cinema itself. Taking as his timeframe the era of celluloid, which is also marked by public experiences of spectatorship and uses of cinema by the state, Rajadhyaksha examines three moments of crisis for the Indian State in which cinema played a central role.

The Wild East written by Barbara Harriss-White and has been published by UCL Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-23 with Social Science categories.

The Wild East bridges political economy and anthropology to examine a variety of il/legal economic sectors and businesses such as red sanders, coal, fire, oil, sand, air spectrum, land, water, real estate, procurement and industrial labour. The 11 case studies, based across India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, explore how state regulative law is often ignored and/or selectively manipulated. The emerging collective narrative shows the workings of regulated criminal economic systems where criminal formations, politicians, police, judges and bureaucrats are deeply intertwined. By pioneering the field-study of the politicisation of economic crime, and disrupting the wider literature on South Asia’s informal economy, The Wild East aims to influence future research agendas through its case for the study of mafia-enterprises and their engagement with governance in South Asia and outside. Its empirical and theoretical contribution to debates about economic crimes in democratic regimes will be of critical value to researchers in Economics, Anthropology, Sociology, Comparative Politics, Political Science and International Relations, Criminologists and Development Studies, as well as to those inside and outside academia interested in current affairs and the relationship between crime, politics and mafia enterprises.

Historical Dictionary Of The Tamils written by Vijaya Ramaswamy and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-08-25 with History categories.

The Tamils have an unbroken history of more than two thousand years. Tamil, the language they speak, is one of the oldest living languages in the world. The only people comparable to the Tamils in terms of their hoary past and vibrant present would be the Jews with one marked difference. The Tamils have always had their homeland 'Tamilaham' (alternately pronounced and spelt 'Tamizhaham') known today as Tamil Nadu which to them represents their mother and is revered by them as 'Tamizh Tai' literally ‘Tamil Mother’. This is in striking contrast to the Jews who have been through a long and arduous struggle to gain their homeland, a deeply contested site to this day with Hebrewisation of Israel being a key marker of Jewish identity in the region. Tamils, by contrast have a clear numerical majority in the region that now comprises Tamil Nadu and the language unites rather than divides adherents of different faiths. The second edition of Historical Dictionary of the Tamils contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 600 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the Tamils.

This book brings together a unique collection of theoretical and empirical analyses of women’s access to land, labour and livelihoods in contemporary India. The authors recognize that gender relations must be viewed intersectionally, along with other social relationships such as caste, ethnicity, religion, sexuality and age, in order to inform an integrated analysis of women’s persistent disadvantage in India. The chapters examine a diverse range of rural and urban livelihoods within sectors such as tea plantations, nursing, hair salons, sex work and waste collection. Documenting the shifts in these sectors in the context of economic liberalization, the authors offer insights on the challenges of development interventions as women negotiate shifts in their livelihood options. Written to engage, the contributions to this book will be of interest both to the general reader and to academics and practitioners in development and gender/women’s studies.
