Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject American Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Seminar für Englische Philologie), course: Language Acquisition in its Developmental Context, language: English, abstract: The examination of language acquisition is an interesting field of linguistic research, no matter whether primary language acquisition of children or second language acquisition of adults is concerned. In general, the ability to comprehend language and to communicate verbally is a defining aspect of the human being; in principle, the ability to acquire language and the will to communicate is present in every human child. Verbal communication is basic to human social interaction. Moreover, the study of language acquisition offers an insight into the operations of the human mind; according to the progression and pace of the language acquisition, the linguistic researchers can draw their own conclusions from the observations. Definitely, linguistics is an interesting scientific research field, which has not been fully examined up to now. Although linguistic researchers have done various studies on the acquisition of language and on speech impediments, there are still many linguistic peculiarities that cannot be explained thus far. During my research on the topic of primary language acquisition of children, I now and again came across a short remark or even a short chapter that commented on the peculiarities of the language development of twins. Further on, I learned about the phenomenon of twin language, often referred to as “idioglossia.” Since these hints aroused my interest, I decided to write my research paper on the topic of the language acquisition of twins and on idioglossia. With regard to linguistic research on the processes of language acquisition, twins offer an interesting approach, because their language development is reported to be different from the language development of same age singletons. In order to prove this thesis, it might be helpful to provide a short introduction to what is considered normal language development for children aged between about three months to about five years. Accordingly, the way in which the language acquisition of twins differs from the norm will be described. Of course, the fact that there are differences begs questions: What might be biological reasons for the delay? If compared to singletons, what are the differences in the twins’ bringing up, or in their interaction with the parents? There are diverse attempts to explain the speech disorders of twins, so the fourth chapter of this research paper is devoted to the explanations for the delayed development with regard to the biological and social factors. AbstractThis study investigates the acquisition of Italian and English by non-identical female twins during the period from birth until three years of age. The focus was to observe how the twins acquired their bilingual skills and how their two languages developed in a context where both same aged children grew up together. This study analyses the synergies that developed between the twins themselves and the adults in their family environment, identifying how the development of their languages responded to the linguistic input received.A qualitative research approach was used with an ethnographic-case study methodology. The mother in her role of participant researcher observed the twins daily in their own environment, recording their linguistic development using both video and written field notes. Observations of their behaviour, interactions, general development, and linguistic productions were noted in the form of diary entries. The video recordings were of their verbal productions and were meticulously transcribed prior to an analysis of their linguistic features. The findings show how the twins acquired their two languages from birth and how these codes developed in the context of the dynamics only possible in the relationship between twins. The findings also show that the two codes developed independently from each other from the onset of speech and that the parents' adherence to the 'one parent-one language' principle was a conditio sine qua non to raise both twins as active users of both Italian and English. The data demonstrate that the language preference of one of the twins, (Zoia), strongly influenced the language production of the other twin (Isabella) in their interactions. This is an interesting outcome, since the language used in their interactions (English) was the one to which they were quantitatively less exposed and the one in which they developed a less rich lexicon. The conclusions show that, for both twins, their language acquisition is similar to many of the documented descriptions of bilingual first language acquisition. The features that diverge from these descriptions include the preference for the twins to use their weakest language in their dyadic interactions due to the strong influence of societal factors, and the understanding that these twins may achieve their full linguistic potential only if an adult is interacting with them individually in a separate environment, since the verbal dominance of one of the twins can potentially be detrimental for the linguistic development of the other twin.

Twin language has held much intrigue to both professionals and the public; however, there is continuing debate about the influence of twin language and later language delays. The purpose of this survey study was to determine if there was a relationship between the type of twin (monozygotic or dizygotic) or the gender of the twins and use of twin talk. In the study, results of 55 twin sets (20 monozygotic twins and 35 dizygotic twins) with an age range of 15 months to 55 years were analyzed. The results indicated that neither the type of twin, gender, nor maternal education significantly impacted the use of twin talk. In addition, twin talk did not significantly impact later language or literacy development. Few participants indicated need for speech language services, although of those who did receive services, speech-sound deficits were most common. Twin rates are increasing and speech-language pathologists should understand their language needs.

The past decade has brought important new advances in the fields of genetics, behavioral genetics, linguistics, language acquisition, studies of language impairment, and brain imaging. Although these advances are each highly relevant to the determination of what a child is innately prepared to bring to language acquisition, the contributing fields of endeavor have traditionally been relatively self-contained, with little cross communication. This volume was developed with the belief that there is considerable value to be gained in the creation of a shared platform for a dialogue across the disciplines. Leading experts in genetics, linguistics, language acquisition, language impairment, and brain imaging are brought together for the purpose of exploring the current evidence, theoretical issues, and research challenges in a way that bridges disciplinary boundaries and points toward future developments in the search for the genetic and environmental bases of language acquisition and impairments. This collection provides discussions and summaries of: *breakthrough findings of the genetic underpinnings of dyslexia; *theoretical and empirical developments in the specification of a phenotype of language acquisition and impairment; *evidence of familiarity and twin concordances of specific language impairment; and *new evidence from brain imaging. It concludes with a critical response from an advocate of rational empiricism.
