El Lapidario es un tratado científico y mágico de las propiedades de las piedras en relación con la astronomía, encargado por Alfonso X, Rey de Castilla hacia 1250 y en su mayoría escritas por el médico real, Moshe Ben Yahuda, un traductor y astrónomo prominente de la Escuela de Traductores de Toledo. Tomado de un compendio de fuentes griegas, helenísticas y árabes, El Lapidario es especialmente significativo, ya que se considera como el primer trabajo científico escrito en una lengua romance. La Biblioteca de El Escorial conserva este manuscrito ilustrado con cerca de cincuenta figuras de animales del zodíaco, y más de seiscientas ilustraciones e iniciales policromadas y letras historiadas. Aunque la copia maestra fue escrita en siríaco, un dialecto del arameo, el tratado es típico de los manuscritos árabes medievales, en los que se señala que la astrología altera las propiedades mágicas y curativas de las piedras. En 1279. el original fue modificado con la inclusión de la obra Libro de las formas e imágenes que están en los cielos.

En el pensamiento del siglo XIII el saber de los astros ocupaba un lugar privilegiado: ciudades como Toledo y Sevilla estaban a la vanguardia de Occidente, para todo aquel que deseara profundizar en la ciencia astrológica y ciertas artes mágicas, gracias a los conocimientos integrados de cristianos, árabes y judíos. El Lapidario es uno de los textos que mayor atracción ha despertado entre los estudiosos de la obra de Alfonso X el Sabio. Tanto la curiosidad generada por el mundo de las piedras expuestas en la obra, como el cuidadísimo códice de la Cámara Regia conservado en la Biblioteca de El Escorial ( H.I.15), han contribuido, sin duda, a despertar un vivo interés en los lectores de todas las épocas. El texto se sustenta sobre la concepción aristotélica de que todas las cosas terrenales están gobernadas por la acción de los astros, de modo que también las piedras, al recibir sus rayos de luz, experimentan esta influencia y, a su vez, pueden ejercer ciertos poderes, sobre todo curativos, según el dominio de los distintos signos del Zodíaco. De ahí el vivo interés que pone el Rey Sabio por clasificar 360 minerales, esfuerzo intelectual que contribuye a un mejor conocimiento del mundo que nos rodea y que pone, una vez más, de manifiesto la curiosidad sin límites de Alfonso X. Según se nos cuenta en el códice, ya Aristóteles había dedicado estudios a la materia del influjo astral en los minerales, y fue el sabio caldeo Abolays el que, continuando su senda, remató la traducción del caldeo al árabe del Lapidario que llegó a manos de Yehudah-Ben Moshe, rabino de la sinanoga de Toledo y miembro destacado de la Escuela de Traductores de aquella ciudad. Es Yehudah el que por encargo del rey traduce del árabe al castellano el Lapidario de Abolays. El códice nos muestra un deslumbrante repertorio de alrededor de cincuenta miniaturas de símbolos del zodíaco, de un total de 638 ilustraciones e iniciales policromadas, con gran variedad de letras capitales historiadas. Perteneció a la biblioteca de don Diego de Mendoza, de la que pasó por compra de Felipe II a la de El Escorial.
