Mimoun's own violent nature and paranoia leads to frustration and rage, which he duly takes out on his wife and children. However, as the years pass, it begins to sound hollow; he does not escape the limitations of the role assigned to him by the patriarchal system, but his daughter will. El Hachmi looks at the role of women within a patriarchal culture while tackling more contemporary issues such as immigration and integration, as well as the fractured identity that results from having roots in two very distinct cultures. It is at once a powerful saga of a Moroccan family and a story of a girl's struggle to find her own identity and break free of a domineering father.

This story is about the last days of Earth before Christ comes back. It is a science fiction novel about an admiral who is forcibly retired after thirty years of honorable service. He hates the way his country is sliding down into lawlessness and sin and hopes to stem the tide. His wife is dead and he is jobless, so he moves from Seattle to Spokane, Washington, where he dedicates the rest of his life to raising his son in peace and quiteso he hopes. This is not to be, however, for his son is at first a troublemaker in school and, finally, a genius who gets them all in trouble with the youthful use of his invention. While building a ship, he is kidnaped by a wealthy man, inhumanly tortured and almost murdered. The mans estate is located and invaded by Davids dad, the admiral. Ben Westly hands out some much-needed, swift justice, though he is too late to save David from the torture. Brought back to life and cured some weeks later by God, David has a new mission in life. Although Earth is judged and destroyed by God, Davids new mission is to provide the means to lead people to a new earth and a new heaven created by God. These are not the meek which inherit the earth.
