Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: May 12, 1921 At the Tuesday morning session, April 5th, the dark, glowering skies made it necessary to turn on the lights in the tabernacle, while outside it was snowing heavily. Overcoats and winter wraps hung from the balcony railing and were in evidence every where. President Grant commented on the excellent attendance, considering the adverse climatic conditions. Elder Stephen L. Richards, the first speaker, quoted Shakes peare's Sweet are the uses of adversity. Financial conditions have been unnatural and upset and many have been obliged to retrench, said he wondered if this condition has not been brought about to vindicate the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The gospel is interpreted in terms of life and living, and while the Church as such does not hold its economic mission as paramount, it does regard temporal affairs elemental in Spiritual growth. To this extent, the mission of the Church is economic. Among all people their temporal affairs are part and portion of their growth and progress. The influence of the Church in economics has had a stabilizing effect on the affairs of the community. Elder Richards gave it as his conviction that the business activities of the community have been saved from catastrophe, by the fact that the president of the Church stands at the head of some of the largest financial institutions of the region over which its membership extends. For his part, said Elder Richards, he repented of any shadow of criticism that might have entered his heart concerning this policy of the Church. He believes that the policy has been vindicated. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: March 24, 1921 I said to you that I know that the Lord communicates with his servants. I have not doubted this as a fact since I was a boy and heard the testimony of my father, regarding the revelation that came to him of the divinity of the mission of the Prophet Joseph. I feel impressed to relate that circumstance and add his testi mony to the one that I am now giving. He accepted a call to a mission about 1880. When he began preaching, in his native land, and bore testimony of the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ, he noticed that the people turned away from him. They were bitter in their hearts against anything 'mormon, and the name of Joseph Smith seemed to arouse antagonism in their hearts. One day he concluded that the best way to get these people would be to preach just the simple principles, the atone ment of the Lord Jesus Christ, the first principles of the gospel, and not bear testimony of the restoration of the gospel. It first came 'simply, as a passing thought, but yet it influenced his future work. In a month or so he became oppressed with a gloomy, downcast feeling and he could not enter into the spirit of his work. He did not really know what was the matter, but his mind became obstructed, his spirit became clogged, he was oppressed and hampered; and that feeling of depression continued until it weighed him down with such heaviness that he went to the Lord and said: 'unless I can get this feeling removed, I will have to go home. I can not continue my work with this feeling. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: January 27, 1921 This imperfect account of the wonderful vision of those two nights was listened to with rapt attention by the large audience, and was repeated for years after by many who heard it. A pro found sensation was produced by its narration, for it unfolded to many minds details of the glory of the spirit world that they had not realized, from reading the general expressions in which the revelations tell of them. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: June 30, 1921 You may think me too absolute in my language; but how can I be too positive in that which I know? Were I to say I know you are in this tabernacle, would any language be too absolute? Just as certainly do I know that this work is true and cannot be overthrown by the world; although they may seek to kill, and destroy, and persecute the saints of God to the death, they never will prevail against it. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: March 3, 1921 The human family in the exercise of their foolish wisdom have succeeded in reducing the natural life of man from nearly a thousand years to an average of but little more than thirty, growing out of their habits, customs and modes of living. This fact shows the vain progress made by the world, in not learning and applying to man's advantage, the laws of life. The Word of Wisdom must be carefully observed, as well as the laws that relate to the elements, of which no one should plead ignorance, to turn the tide and stream of life, so as to give length of days and multiplicity of years, until the age of a man shall be as the age of a tree, instead of the few clays which are now his portion. The young especially of our day should not be afraid of a free and constant use of cold water both for internal and external applications. It is perhaps the most important of all the ele ments, from the fact that it more readily and intimately associ ates itself with all other elements than others we have named. Earth, air and the heavens above us are full of it, and God has chosen it as the one through which we enter His kingdom, the one that enters largely into many of His sacred ordinances for the salvation of man: to represent the shed blood of our Redeemer in the sacrament; and when the elder would wash his feet against any place or people, pure cold water in summer or winter, will answer the purpose. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: July 21, 1921 Another text where the use is mentioned of tables, or tablets, for writing upon is found in Habakkuk 2: 2, and reads thus Write the vision in a book and make it plain upon tables. Interpreting this passage in the light of the quotation from Isaiah 30: 8, the meaning apparently is that the vision should be written upon tables, or tablets, that it Should be for a time to come for ever and for ever. Since the evident purpose in writing Isaiah's prophecies on tablets was to ensure their uncorrupted preservation for 'ages, why should we not conclude that the vision given to Habakkuk was written on tablets with a like object also in view, and, consequently, was to be engraved on metal, which, it goes without saying, would be of a kind identical with that used by Isaiah, namely, brass, in order that the whole book or collection of sacred plates might be of uniform material. It is to be noticed, too, that it is only when the order is given to write the vision on tablets that the command to make it plain is expressed. It is not illogical, therefore, to conclude that the injunction concerning the plainness with which the writing on tablets was to be executed, was but another way of telling Habakkuk to take witnesses or assistants along with him when he did the recording, just as we have seen that Isaiah did in order that his prophecies might be made plain when written on metal plates. Habakkuk was not directed to make the vision plain when he wrote it in the book which, doubtless being intended for public service, would be written in the common language of the people, of which the prophet very probably had a very ready knowledge, and so could himself do the work acceptably to the Lord; but there evidently was some special reason why Habakkuk was commanded to make the vision plain when writing upon tablets, and the explanation of the matter as just given seems quite plausible in view of what Isaiah was commanded to do when he wrote certain of his prophecies on metal plates.
