Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: August 24, 1922 As I sat alone the following Sunday afternoon, my folks having gone to meeting, I began to reflect on my condition. I remembered the advice that had been given me by my mother a week before, and decided to follow it. I locked the door, and for the first time in my life knelt down and began to pray to my Heavenly Father. I had always bowed in prayer with the family, but had never prayed alone. I was thoroughly in earnest. I appealed to the Eternal Father just as a child appeals to his earthly parent, the substance of my prayer being Lord, what wilt thou have me to do I cannot describe what followed all that I can say is this: The Lord convinced me as thoroughly as if he had spoken to me by his own voice that it was his will that I should become a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I arose from my knees with a burning desire in my heart to be baptized, a desire which was gratified a few days later - March 2md, 1872. The step cost me my job, but I succeeded in finding another. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: January 5, 1922 Our third article reads: We 'believe that through the atone ment of Christ, all mankind may be saved by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel. In other words we do not believe that a mere profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will save people. We believe that as we are saved in this life by our industry, by our intelligence, by our labor, by our works, so will we be saved in the kingdom of our Father, when the battle of life is ended, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, upon which salvation is promised. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 30, 1922 The speaker then referred to the new and everlasting covenant and said that it was a contract between God and his people. Boys and girls who attend the schools and universities of the country should not think there is anything in the Gospel which would prevent them from accepting and developing a truth, for all truth is included in it. What is needed is an interpretation of the Gospel, and that interpretation should come through the institutions and auxiliaries of the Church, that the young may know there is nothing about it which would prevent them from developing all truth. He closed by bearing his testimony to the divinity of the latter-day work. Elder James E. Talmage was the next speaker. He said at times it is well for one to look at himself, but when he does so he should be careful of the mirror which he chooses for that purpose. So with the Church. It is well at times to become introspective. The speaker then referred to the early apostolic days of the Church. He showed how the Gospel spread until Paul said all had heard it. Then followed a period of apostasy. Pagan rites and ceremonies were introduced and a period of darkness resulted. Then came men who groped toward the light and attempted to bring about a reformation. At last, the speaker said, God again spoke from the heavens. God, the Father, and Jesus Christ the Son appeared again upon the earth. This Church has no mother church. It has sprung from no other; it was founded by Jesus Christ himself. Peter, James and John, the presidency of the Church in the days of old, have restored the authority of that Church. The Church has been re-established in these the latter days. While this may shock the ears of some, it should not. The Church of England declared many years before the coming forth of this Church in 1830 that there was a great apostasy in the world. Elder Talmage then read from Section 22 of the Doctrine and Covenants regarding the new and everlasting covenant, and from the New Testament in which it is called unwise to put new wine into old bottles or new cloth upon old garments. That was to show that there was to be no compromise between the things of God and the things of men. The Lord is not leaving his Church without guidance, but is speaking through those who represent him upon the earth. Elder Talmage closed by urging his hearers to follow the counsel of the leaders of the Church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 9, 1922 President Grant said it was a source of great satisfaction to him to see such a large attendance. He said he had no recollection of any opening of conference on a week day when some of those attending had to stand. He was grateful to see so many present, hoped all would be fed on the bread of life, and that whatever he said would be for the good of himself and the congregation. When the Opening prayer was made, he said, and a supplication went up to God that law and order might be upheld, he knew what the keynote should be. President Grant then read a selection from the Doctrine and Covenants to the effect that laws and rulers should be upheld and order maintained. That, he said, meant that men should be able to labor without running the risk of being killed by someone who objects to their doing such work. The President said he was convinced beyond the shadow of a doubt that it is the duty of every Latter-day Saint to obey the law, to uphold the law and sustain the law. It is the duty of every man and woman in the Church to uphold the laws. This includes the prohibition law and the cigarette law. President Grant said that only those men who will agree to support the cigarette law and keep it on the statute books should be supported by the Latter-day Saints. The founder of this Church met the Father and the Son face to face, and his followers have been proclaiming that fact to the world since, said the President. He then read an account of the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum; how the Prophet declared he was going like a lamb to the slaughter. The speaker said his mother had told him that a more God-fearing man than Hyrum Smith never lived. He declared he believes that Joseph and Hyrum are working on the other side for the advancement of the plan of salvation as they worked here, and that they have attained the highest degree of exaltation. Men can conspire and can work against the Church of God as established upon the earth, the speaker said, but no one can find a man since Jesus Christ who has done more for the salvation of mankind than Joseph Smith. Hundreds of thousands of persons, he said, have a testimony of the truth of this fact, and all the lies in the world cannot stop this work. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: February 16, 1922 Hope, then, is a precious thing to have. It is the mainstay and dependance of a happy life. It is the grand treasure that we need, the pearl for which no price is too dear. Its value cannot be computed in pounds shillings and pence; yet it is within the reach of everyone of us, without money and without price. In fact, it is a treasure which God has given to every son and daughter of Adam and Eve, and we sometimes make it do service in promoting our happiness. Jews, Christians, heathens, all possess this gift from God, and are more or less contented and happy so long as their lives are passed under its beneficent influ ence; but the trouble is we do not or cannot always exercise a vigorous hope. Some of us are full of hopefulness so long as we are sailing the sea of life in fair weather, but once let storms or disappointments fall to our lot and we send before the winds with fear and worry in our hearts. There are some people, however, who seem to be always full of hope. They see clear through the darkest cloud to the silver lining on the other side of it. There is nothing in this life that does not have something of a bright side to it, and they always keep their eyes fixed on the lighted part. Their's is a hope that does not get threadbare, it does not wear out though day and year in and out it is in con stant service. Time has no power to tarnish it, but it grows brighter and brighter the more it is used as time progresses. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: January 26, 1922 Now, in this day of pestilence and scourge, let us prepare in every way we can to resist the inroads. Of disease. Pray? Yes, pray without ceasing, pray without words, but let those words be the expression of the prayer in our souls; pray with deeds that the prayer may have more force and be more effective, The mere knowledge of what we ought to do is not a saving power. Once a great scourge of cholera broke out in a certain European city. It was found that most of the cases were confined to, or could be traced to, a particular district of the city. That district derived its water supply from an old distributing system the other part of the city was supplied with water through a new system and the purity of the water was more carefully guarded in the new system than in the old. A capable scientist suspected at once that there must be the intimate relation of cause and effect between the water used in the infected part of the city and the virulent scourge there. He made his examination, made chemical analysis and microscopical tests, and he saw the cholera germs in the water. He developed the germs in cultures, the seed of which was contained in a drop of that infected water; and he gave warning to the people, telling them whence the scourge of the contagion and warning them not to drink any unboiled water. Boiling the water would insure the death of the cholera bacillus, for like other living things, these bacilli are limited in their ability to withstand excessively high temperatures. There were many who had faith in him, not a dead useless faith that amounted to mere curiosity, or at most, mental assent, but a faith that stirred them to action, that made them light their fires and boil the water for domestic use, and they were saved. There were others who possibly thought well of the suggestion, but who had not faith enough or energy enough or common sense enough to apply it. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: January 12, 1922 Wireless then, by which a little sound can travel in all four directions for thousands of miles, and be picked up by a million instruments if they are only in tune. We did not have wireless telegraphy, or wireless telephones, or anything of that kind, so he felt quite safe in ridiculing me for believing in prayer by saying I could not be heard. But I told him God had answered my prayers, and I knew it, and I proposed to go on praying. He also ridiculed me for believing in the Book of Mormon, because it taught that the forefathers of the American Indians were skillful in the use of cement, and erected cement buildings. Why, they did not know anything about cement in those times, he said. The whole thing is a fraud. I told him God had given me a testimony in my heart and soul that this book was true. I believed it absolutely, and I expected to live to see the day when we would find that the forefathers of the American Indians did understand building with cement. Since that time there has been uncovered a monument down here in Mexico, which is 200 feet high, and as big as this whole block of ten acres I I guess they knew something about cement - with a ten-acre foundation, 200 feet high, built of cement; and from the top of this monument you overlook a valley were you see a mound here and a mound there, all around, and as they are uncovering the mounds, lo and behold they are cement dwellings. The first time I was ever entertained at dinner in a large private home in the great city of London, my host had also invited some newspaper men and some friends. Among others invited was a gentlemen who had been connected with the British legation in Constantinople. He' had traveled extensively, and I spent nearly the entire evening conversing with him, because I thoroughly enjoyed listening to his descriptions of the lands he had visited. Among other things he said: Mr. Grant, the last time I was in Canada, I came across the most inexplicable thing of my life. Away up in the northern wilds of the Dominion, among those heathen Indians, I found woven with beads the exact dupli cate of patterns that I had seen in the Holy Land, woven in fabrics or what is known as oriental Holy Land rugs. I had never in all my travels in different parts of the world seen any of those patterns except in the Holy Land; and the idea of finding, away up among the North American Indians, in the northern part of Canada, the exact duplicates of Holy Land patterns, is the most inexplicable thing of my life. I said Why, that is easy. Why so? These heathens never heard of Jerusalem. I asked, Did you ever read the Book of Mormon? N o. I will send you a copy. The fore fathers of the American Indians came from Jerusalem. What? He exclaimed, that explains the inexplicable. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: January 19, 1922 It is hurtful to conceive of religion as a negative thing, state, condition; on the contrary, it is impressively positive, requiring action, and the results of this life are not to be summed up in terms of what we have not done, what we have refrained from doing, only, but in terms of what we have tried to do, and in the measure of the effort we have put forth to accomplish something for good, which is the same thing as saying something for God. Mere immersion in water, and the laying on of hands, would not be, could not be, an ordinance recognizable and acceptable beyond the grave, were it not that these ordinances are prescribed and required; and, therefore, when administered to the prepared and receptive candidate, by the authority given of God, they become effective as means toward salvation and are indispensable to salvation. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 16, 1922 President Penrose said he had been blessed with acquaintance with several of the heads of this Church, and he declared all were men of God. He said he enjoyed the confidence of President Grant and was glad that he was able to pray for him and help him in any way possible. The speaker said he had his certificate of ordination as an elder in this Church with him. According to that, he said, he was ordained to that office in the Priesthood on January 6th, 1851. Soon after that he started to preach the Gospel without purse or script and did so for ten years. He was told in those early days that a man was fortunate in being able to wear out in the service of the Lord. He said his eyesight had failed, but was glad he had been able to wear it out for the Lord. In regard to the liberties of the Latter-day Saints, President Penrose said he had never been forced nor coerced to do a single thing he did not want to do. He declared that everything he had done had been done voluntarily, and that all his remaining days are at the Lord's service. The speaker said he was glad to be able to attend conference once more and partake of the spirit thereof. He then referred to the rewards which await those who are faithful, and closed by bearing his testimony to the truth of the Gospel.
