Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: May 18, 1922 The next speaker was Elder George Albert Smith. He said Latter-day Saints should at all times be ready to respond to a call to speak the word of the Lord. If they will store up in their minds the truths that have been given, they will be pre pared to meet any emergency. Elder Smith referred to the addresses of the three educators who spoke at the opening session of conference. No good man, he said, can come under the influence of a gathering of Latter-day Saints and imbibe the spirit of the occasion and not say something good. He referred especially to the comment of Dr. Thomas Nixon Carver, who said, in effect, that if he were looking for an example of nation building he could find none better than that of the Mormons. In comment Elder Smith said he should like to add to Dr. Carver's observation that this is God's work: it is not a people going alone and accomplishing a great purpose. He referred to a speech made to Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler, who said, in effect, that there will be no abatement of the world's evils until simple faith in God is restored. God's people, Elder Smith said, are trustees. Theirs is the responsibility of warning the nations of the earth. The wonld has turned away from God, peoples have heaped unto themselves idols. History repeats itself, said Elder Smith. God is warning the world through his servants as he warned it in the days of Noah. Noah preached repentance 120 years. In this dispensation thousands of Elders with the divine authority to sound a warning are lifting up their voices in all the world, calling to the honest in heart, Come out of Babylon, 0 ye my people. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the only solution of the world's ills; it is God's plan for the salvation of his children, said Elder Smith. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 30, 1922 The speaker then referred to the new and everlasting covenant and said that it was a contract between God and his people. Boys and girls who attend the schools and universities of the country should not think there is anything in the Gospel which would prevent them from accepting and developing a truth, for all truth is included in it. What is needed is an interpretation of the Gospel, and that interpretation should come through the institutions and auxiliaries of the Church, that the young may know there is nothing about it which would prevent them from developing all truth. He closed by bearing his testimony to the divinity of the latter-day work. Elder James E. Talmage was the next speaker. He said at times it is well for one to look at himself, but when he does so he should be careful of the mirror which he chooses for that purpose. So with the Church. It is well at times to become introspective. The speaker then referred to the early apostolic days of the Church. He showed how the Gospel spread until Paul said all had heard it. Then followed a period of apostasy. Pagan rites and ceremonies were introduced and a period of darkness resulted. Then came men who groped toward the light and attempted to bring about a reformation. At last, the speaker said, God again spoke from the heavens. God, the Father, and Jesus Christ the Son appeared again upon the earth. This Church has no mother church. It has sprung from no other; it was founded by Jesus Christ himself. Peter, James and John, the presidency of the Church in the days of old, have restored the authority of that Church. The Church has been re-established in these the latter days. While this may shock the ears of some, it should not. The Church of England declared many years before the coming forth of this Church in 1830 that there was a great apostasy in the world. Elder Talmage then read from Section 22 of the Doctrine and Covenants regarding the new and everlasting covenant, and from the New Testament in which it is called unwise to put new wine into old bottles or new cloth upon old garments. That was to show that there was to be no compromise between the things of God and the things of men. The Lord is not leaving his Church without guidance, but is speaking through those who represent him upon the earth. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: May 4, 1922 The Nottingham annual conference was held Sunday, April 23rd, in the Corn Exchange, Thurland Street, Nottingham. President Orson F. Whitney, Sister Mary Wells Whitney, and Elder William A. Morton were in attendance from Liverpool. There were also present: President Harold E. Brough, all the traveling Elders Of the Nottingham conference, Elder Joseph E. Wright and Sister Katherine G. Wright, lately of the Scottish conference, and Elders Earl Palfreyman and Vernon W. Maughan, of the Birmingham conference. A Priesthood meeting was held Saturday evening. President Brough, the first speaker, said he had been greatly blessed during his ministry and had experienced much joy in the performance of his missionary labors. The anti-mormon agitation Of the past few months had attracted hundreds of people to the meetings of the Saints, and many are earnestly investigating the doctrines Of the Church. The condition of the conference is very satis factory. Elder Wright related interesting experiences he had had in Brooklyn, New York, also in Glasgow, Dunoon, and Edinburgh. Elder Morton described himself as one of many thousands Of British subjects who had been trapped by the Mormons. He was caught more than thirty years ago and had been held fast ever since. He was a willing captive, however, and had never had the least desire to escape. Mormonism was the greatest thing that had ever come into his life; it had proved an inestimable blessing to him and his family. President Whitney prefaced his remarks by congratulating the missionaries who had the privilege of laboring in the beautiful city of Nottingham. A missionary's success, he said, is not to be measured by the number Of tracts he distributes or by the number of baptisms he performs; the successful missionary is one who performs faithfully his daily duties. III the exodus of the Saints from Illinois, men were sent on ahead to build log cabins, split rails, fence land, and plant crops; not for themselves, but for those who were coming after. I remembered the advice that had been given me by my mother a week before, and decided to follow it. I locked the door, and for the first time in my life knelt down and began to pray to my Heavenly Father. I had always bowed in prayer with the family, but had never prayed alone. I was thoroughly in earnest. I appealed to the Eternal Father just as a child appeals to his earthly parent, the substance of my prayer being Lord, what wilt thou have me to do I cannot describe what followed all that I can say is this: The Lord convinced me as thoroughly as if he had spoken to me by his own voice that it was his will that I should become a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I arose from my knees with a burning desire in my heart to be baptized, a desire which was gratified a few days later - March 2md, 1872. The step cost me my job, but I succeeded in finding another.
