Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 9, 1922 President Grant said it was a source of great satisfaction to him to see such a large attendance. He said he had no recollection of any opening of conference on a week day when some of those attending had to stand. He was grateful to see so many present, hoped all would be fed on the bread of life, and that whatever he said would be for the good of himself and the congregation. When the Opening prayer was made, he said, and a supplication went up to God that law and order might be upheld, he knew what the keynote should be. President Grant then read a selection from the Doctrine and Covenants to the effect that laws and rulers should be upheld and order maintained. That, he said, meant that men should be able to labor without running the risk of being killed by someone who objects to their doing such work. The President said he was convinced beyond the shadow of a doubt that it is the duty of every Latter-day Saint to obey the law, to uphold the law and sustain the law. It is the duty of every man and woman in the Church to uphold the laws. This includes the prohibition law and the cigarette law. President Grant said that only those men who will agree to support the cigarette law and keep it on the statute books should be supported by the Latter-day Saints. The founder of this Church met the Father and the Son face to face, and his followers have been proclaiming that fact to the world since, said the President. He then read an account of the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum; how the Prophet declared he was going like a lamb to the slaughter. The speaker said his mother had told him that a more God-fearing man than Hyrum Smith never lived. He declared he believes that Joseph and Hyrum are working on the other side for the advancement of the plan of salvation as they worked here, and that they have attained the highest degree of exaltation. Men can conspire and can work against the Church of God as established upon the earth, the speaker said, but no one can find a man since Jesus Christ who has done more for the salvation of mankind than Joseph Smith. Hundreds of thousands of persons, he said, have a testimony of the truth of this fact, and all the lies in the world cannot stop this work. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 30, 1922 The speaker then referred to the new and everlasting covenant and said that it was a contract between God and his people. Boys and girls who attend the schools and universities of the country should not think there is anything in the Gospel which would prevent them from accepting and developing a truth, for all truth is included in it. What is needed is an interpretation of the Gospel, and that interpretation should come through the institutions and auxiliaries of the Church, that the young may know there is nothing about it which would prevent them from developing all truth. He closed by bearing his testimony to the divinity of the latter-day work. Elder James E. Talmage was the next speaker. He said at times it is well for one to look at himself, but when he does so he should be careful of the mirror which he chooses for that purpose. So with the Church. It is well at times to become introspective. The speaker then referred to the early apostolic days of the Church. He showed how the Gospel spread until Paul said all had heard it. Then followed a period of apostasy. Pagan rites and ceremonies were introduced and a period of darkness resulted. Then came men who groped toward the light and attempted to bring about a reformation. At last, the speaker said, God again spoke from the heavens. God, the Father, and Jesus Christ the Son appeared again upon the earth. This Church has no mother church. It has sprung from no other; it was founded by Jesus Christ himself. Peter, James and John, the presidency of the Church in the days of old, have restored the authority of that Church. The Church has been re-established in these the latter days. While this may shock the ears of some, it should not. The Church of England declared many years before the coming forth of this Church in 1830 that there was a great apostasy in the world. Elder Talmage then read from Section 22 of the Doctrine and Covenants regarding the new and everlasting covenant, and from the New Testament in which it is called unwise to put new wine into old bottles or new cloth upon old garments. That was to show that there was to be no compromise between the things of God and the things of men. The Lord is not leaving his Church without guidance, but is speaking through those who represent him upon the earth. Elder Talmage closed by urging his hearers to follow the counsel of the leaders of the Church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 16, 1922 President Penrose said he had been blessed with acquaintance with several of the heads of this Church, and he declared all were men of God. He said he enjoyed the confidence of President Grant and was glad that he was able to pray for him and help him in any way possible. The speaker said he had his certificate of ordination as an elder in this Church with him. According to that, he said, he was ordained to that office in the Priesthood on January 6th, 1851. Soon after that he started to preach the Gospel without purse or script and did so for ten years. He was told in those early days that a man was fortunate in being able to wear out in the service of the Lord. He said his eyesight had failed, but was glad he had been able to wear it out for the Lord. In regard to the liberties of the Latter-day Saints, President Penrose said he had never been forced nor coerced to do a single thing he did not want to do. He declared that everything he had done had been done voluntarily, and that all his remaining days are at the Lord's service. The speaker said he was glad to be able to attend conference once more and partake of the spirit thereof. He then referred to the rewards which await those who are faithful, and closed by bearing his testimony to the truth of the Gospel. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 2, 1922 To-day shalt thou be with me in Paradise, the world of spirits. What is this world of spirits? Where is it? It is an intermedi ate state between this life and the resurrection int-o eternal glory. To the righteous it is a place of rest, a Paradise, indeed; to the unrighteous it is a purgatory 011 hell, where they are punished and corrected and taught and made ready for the resurrection. Jesus went there and the thief went there. But Jesus went to teach and the thief went to be taught. The latter could not be exalted into heavenly glory until he was prepared for it. Better to repent at the eleventh hour than not at all, but heaven is not gained at a single bound. That was Joseph Smith's doctrine. It was the doctrine-of the Saviour. They say we are not Christians. Why, we are nothing if we are not Christians. We believe in Christ more than any church on earth. Joseph Smith had a vision in which he saw the human race and their eternal destiny. He saw the many mansions that the Saviour referred to. He saw the celestial, terrestrial, and telestial kingdoms, and kingdoms that were not kingdoms of glory. It was shown to him that the glorified planets, the stars, are God's kingdoms. They all have a law given unto them, and whichever glory we attain to we must obey the law pertaining to that glory. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: January 5, 1922 Our third article reads: We 'believe that through the atone ment of Christ, all mankind may be saved by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel. In other words we do not believe that a mere profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will save people. We believe that as we are saved in this life by our industry, by our intelligence, by our labor, by our works, so will we be saved in the kingdom of our Father, when the battle of life is ended, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, upon which salvation is promised. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: April 13, 1922 But notwithstanding there are in heaven, as the Scriptures plainly teach, Gods many and Lords many, there is but one God for us to worship. He is the God of Gods referred to by the Psalmist, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and the Father of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In Him we live and move and have our being from Him cometh every good and perfect gift, and to Him we render thanksgiving and praise. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: August 24, 1922 As I sat alone the following Sunday afternoon, my folks having gone to meeting, I began to reflect on my condition. I remembered the advice that had been given me by my mother a week before, and decided to follow it. I locked the door, and for the first time in my life knelt down and began to pray to my Heavenly Father. I had always bowed in prayer with the family, but had never prayed alone. I was thoroughly in earnest. I appealed to the Eternal Father just as a child appeals to his earthly parent, the substance of my prayer being Lord, what wilt thou have me to do I cannot describe what followed all that I can say is this: The Lord convinced me as thoroughly as if he had spoken to me by his own voice that it was his will that I should become a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I arose from my knees with a burning desire in my heart to be baptized, a desire which was gratified a few days later - March 2md, 1872. The step cost me my job, but I succeeded in finding another. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: September 7, 1922 I believe firmly that the citizenship of this country would be promoted and raised beyond computation if only there were some way of adequately teaching the principles of true religion to boys and girls, men and women. I look for no adjustment of these great disorders which now threaten the peace of our communities, which now threaten our industrial system, which threaten the security of property, wealth and acquired possessions, until men learn these great lessons of religion, until they learn that we cannot live in an established order of society until we are con siderate of each other, until we do regard the interests of our fellows as sacredly as we regard our own interest and our own Welfare. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: February 16, 1922 Hope, then, is a precious thing to have. It is the mainstay and dependance of a happy life. It is the grand treasure that we need, the pearl for which no price is too dear. Its value cannot be computed in pounds shillings and pence; yet it is within the reach of everyone of us, without money and without price. In fact, it is a treasure which God has given to every son and daughter of Adam and Eve, and we sometimes make it do service in promoting our happiness. Jews, Christians, heathens, all possess this gift from God, and are more or less contented and happy so long as their lives are passed under its beneficent influ ence; but the trouble is we do not or cannot always exercise a vigorous hope. Some of us are full of hopefulness so long as we are sailing the sea of life in fair weather, but once let storms or disappointments fall to our lot and we send before the winds with fear and worry in our hearts. There are some people, however, who seem to be always full of hope. They see clear through the darkest cloud to the silver lining on the other side of it. There is nothing in this life that does not have something of a bright side to it, and they always keep their eyes fixed on the lighted part. Their's is a hope that does not get threadbare, it does not wear out though day and year in and out it is in con stant service. Time has no power to tarnish it, but it grows brighter and brighter the more it is used as time progresses.
