Excerpt from Laundry Manual In presenting this little book to the public, the aim has been to furnish a book the need of which has long been felt by the authors. The course, as treated in this manual, having been used with success in their respective schools for several years, has now been placed in book form, in the hope that it will be an aid to instructors and at the same time be a help to the housewife. The outline of lessons has been added as a suggestion to instructors for presenting the course in twelve lessons of two and a half hours each, to classes of eight students. This outline, together with the arrangement of chapters, has been based upon the assortment of clothes in the introductory chapter. The illustrations have been designed to show clearly the methods of folding garments. The chapter on stains has been arranged in tabulated form to facilitate reference. With a knowledge of chemistry, students will be able to appreciate the reactions employed in the removal of stains. The authors acknowledge with pleasure their indebtedness to Miss Eva J. Phelps, Instructor of English in Boardman Manual Training High School, for corrections in the manuscript; and to Miss L. H. Aside from its value as a correlation field for both physics and chemistry, laundry work is an excellent form of manual training for girls, offering, as it does, many of the advantages of the forge work for boys. The rough garment, like the crude metal, has to be modeled by the application of heat and pressure; the iron must be the right temperature, the pressure must be skillfully applied, faulty parts must be gone over and over again until the right surface and texture is produced. Even the rougher cleansing processes, restoring the soiled linen to its original freshness and purity, may be made truly educative in fostering a love of dainty and perfect cleanliness - that outward sign of the inward grace of true refinement which forever distinguishes the gentlewoman. Excerpt from The Laundry Manual; Or Washing Made Easy: Being, a Complete and Practical Treatise on the Best Methods, of Washing, Bleaching, Starching, Ironing, and Polishing, Together With Receipts for Making Soap, Taking Out Stains, Etc;, Eyc In presenting this little work to the public our object is to place before our renders a few valuable recipes, in a neat and convenient form, so that they may be at hand whenever desired, and to give such instructions in the various processes of getting up linen as we are able to furnish from many years' experience in the laundry business, and thus assist not only the wife, mother, and blooming miss, in their (often) rough and tiresome journey of life, but useful to all who will be benefited by the suggestions of others. These recipes are known to be valuable, and no preparation will be recommended in this work but such as experience has shown to be of sterling worth, and such as may be used with perfect safety according to directions. It was not the original design to furnish any recipes for cooking, but being fully convinced that good wholesome bread is one of the great wants of the age, we have given a few recipes for its production. The process which we employ for this certainly possesses the merit of simplicity, and we have proved it to be the best in the world for all who appreciate health. Though nothing has been said respecting the use of washing-machines, the instructions here given for washing will not only render their employment more successful, but it is believed that they will enable tho housewife to perform this operation without the aid of machinery of any kind, with a saving, in most cases, of fully one-half in labor and wear of linen. Trusting, therefore, that these few pages may be the means of lightening the duties of the laundry, and thus confer a blessing upon those who have them to perform, we respectfully submit them to the consideration of our readers.
