First Corinthians 15:56, "The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law," is both puzzling and neglected. It is puzzling since there appears to be no precursor in 1 Corinthians to the law-critical statement found there. It is neglected because of its size. Nevertheless, the short verse offers the opportunity to analyze in a rudimentary state Paul's law-sin notion that appears full-blown in Romans, and the absence of a polemical setting allows scholars to examine a law-critical statement issued during a polemical lull. In The Law and Knowledge of Good and Evil, Vlachos weighs attempts to explain the presence of 1 Cor 15:56 in 1 Corinthians and argues that the Genesis Fall narrative, where the tempter plied his seductions by way of the commandment, provides the theological substructure to Paul's understanding of the law's provocation of sin. In doing so, Vlachos contends that Paul reaches the historical high water mark of his polemic against the salvific efficacy of the law by locating a law-sin nexus in Eden, and, contrary to some recent perspectives on Paul, he argues that the edenically informed axiom in 1 Cor 15:56 suggests that Paul's fundamental concern with the law was rooted in primordial rather than ethnic soil. While studies of Paul and the law have tended to bypass Eden, The Law and Knowledge of Good and Evil breaks ground by moving the argument beyond Second Temple Judaism to the Genesis Fall account, where the prohibition against partaking of the knowledge of good and evil led to the knowledge of sin.

In addition, this book provides an inside window into some real spiritual warfare taking place right now. The Book of Knowledge of Good and Evil also provides possible end results depending on which side wins these specific battles. If you worship God only this book will be of comfort to you, but if you not only worship God, but the apostles and prophets also, putting them on the same pedestal as God Almighty, you may wind up disliking me and this book. One of the main reasons why I wrote this book is to take the churches out of their comfort zone. My hope is many Christians all over the world will dig in their Bible and try to prove me wrong. Who knows, maybe we will all learn something new as a result. As for the ministers, preachers, pastors and priest who think it is their job to make themselves rich by taking their congregations hard earned money, who are too lazy to open the Bible to even challenge me. When you tell your congregation that I'm the devil or a servant of the devil, then may the authority of this book turn your church upside down and lay it to waste!

There is a common way of thinking that distinguishes between the regular law-abiding citizens and the “criminals.” The many high-profile killings committed by police officers in recent years, with the George Floyd case being the most famous, have served to render this simplistic way of thinking highly problematic. It is more realistic, in terms of cultural understanding, to see violence as a dialectic; it can come from the direction of “law and order” or from the direction of the violation of law. Employing the thought of René Girard, Søren Kierkegaard, and others, this book provides a framework for understanding this dialectic. Drawing on examples from slavery, lynching, the killing of unarmed Black persons by police, and the death penalty, the theme of violence coming from the direction of “law and order” is vividly illustrated, with Girard’s thought being employed to formulate a deeply rooted theoretical understanding. There is also extensive attention paid to many examples of mass shootings and terrorist attacks—violence that is intentionally immoral and illegal. A psychological taxonomy is employed that comprehends such violence under the headings of the psychopathic, the psychotic, the traumatized, and the ideological actor.
