Excerpt from The Laws of Health, and School Hygiene: A Hand-Book on School Hygiene Some may object that the sections dealing with anatomy and physiology are too short. This abbrevia tion is intentional. There are already excellent small manuals dealing with physiology suitable for the teacher's needs, and what is wanted is a book treating of the application of physiological knowledge to the hygiene of school life. The tendency in lectures on the laws of health is to overburden them with purely anatomical and physiological details, and so obscure their real pur pose and lessen their value. In the original preparation of my lectures, I gained many useful hints from the excellent articles on the teaching of hygiene to teachers, which appeared in the British Medical Journal during 1904 - 1905. Use has been made of them once more in preparing this manual. Most of the illustrations have been furnished by my publishers. For No. 16 I am indebted to Messrs. E. 85 S. Excerpt from School Hygiene and the Laws of Health: A Text-Book for Teachers and Students in Training The matter upon which this book is founded, formed the basis of a course of lectures delivered to the teachers acting under the Education Committee of Sheffield and the students of the Sheffield Training College. Some of those ,who attended the lectures being kind enough to consider them of value in connection with their school work, it was determined to arrange them in book form, in the hope that the information they contained might be of assistance to teachers elsewhere. The idea of the Education Committee in arranging for the course of lectures, was to afford the teachers an opportunity of acquiring such information as might assist them in protecting the health of the school children. It was desired that the course might include instruction, not only in what have been called the "laws of health," which the teachers might in turn impart to the children, but also hints on the manner of detecting diseases likely to be met with in school. The lectures themselves were largely modelled on the plan set out in the syllabus for the Sanitary Institute examination in School Hygiene: each system in the body was taken up in turn, the structure and functions of the organs composing it were considered, and the modes in which they might be affected by school conditions and disease, and how they were to be protected were described. The arrangement adopted for the lectures has been continued in the following pages, and each system has been treated of in a separate chapter in the first part of the book. As a matter of fact, it has engaged the serious attention of School Boards and Committees, and been made the subject of repeated legislation by the Educa tion Department. The result of all this is seen in the improved character of the school-buildings which are everywhere being erected. In these, we find that greater attention is paid, not only to the space demanded for each pupil, to which a few years ago the official legislation was almost exclusively confined, but educationists have come to see that lighting, warming, ventila tion, and general sanitary conditions, are of prime importance in their bearing on the health and progress of the children gathered in these schools. Much still remains to be learnt in regard to these matters, and it is of the highest importance that school-managers and all who are concerned in the erection of school premises - or what is perhaps equally important, the modification of already existing schools - should be well acquainted with the principles which determine the sanitary condition of all school premises and arrangements.
