This book provides a systematic exploration of family literacy, including its historic origins, theoretical expansion, practical applications within the field, and focused topics within family literacy. Grounded in sociocultural approaches to learning and literacy, the book covers research on how families use literacy in their daily lives as well as different models of family literacy programs and interventions that provide opportunities for parent-child literacy interactions and that support the needs of children and parents as adult learners. Chapters discuss key topics, including the roles of race, ethnicity, culture, and social class in family literacy; digital family literacies; family-school relationships and parental engagement in schools; fathers’ involvement in family literacy; accountability and employment; and more. Throughout the book, Lynch and Prins share evidence-based literacy practices and highlight examples of successful family literacy programs. Acknowledging lingering concerns, challenges, and critiques of family literacy, the book also offers recommendations for research, policy, and practice. Accessible and thorough, this book comprehensively addresses family literacies and is relevant for researchers, scholars, graduate students, and instructors and practitioners in language and literacy programs.

First published in 1979, this study is one of the first works of educational research to include detailed assessments of family environments in an analysis of performance of children at their schools. Much of the research is based on data collected from families in Australia, Canada and England and the findings have been integrated with results from other family environments research. The study also explores social and psychological conceptual positions that will have relevance for further educational investigations. This book will be of particular interest to those studying the relationship between family environments and education, as well as the sociology of education.

Schools that are most successful in engaging parents and other family members in support of their children's learning look beyond traditional definitions of parent involvement--parent teacher organizations or signing report cards--to a broader conception of supporting families in activities outside of school that can encourage their children's' learning. This idea book is intended to assist educators, parents, and policy makers as they develop school-family partnerships, identifying and describing successful strategies used by 20 local Title I programs. Following an executive summary, the book notes resources for involving families in education, includes research supporting such partnerships, and describes how Title I encourages partnerships. Next, the book describes successful local approaches to family involvement in education, organized around strategies for overcoming common barriers to family involvement, including: (1) overcoming time and resource constraints; (2) providing information and training to parents and school staff; (3) restructuring schools to support family involvement; (4) bridging school-family differences; and (5) tapping external supports for partnerships. Finally, the book presents conclusions about establishing and sustaining partnerships, noting that at the same time that successful partnerships share accountability, specific stakeholders must assume individual responsibility, and that those schools that succeed in involving large numbers of parents invest energy in finding solutions for problems, not excuses. Four appendices present profiles of 10 successful partnerships, descriptions in table format of 20 successful local approaches, contact information for profiled partnership programs, and resources for building successful partnerships. Contains 13 references. (HTH)

Families are potentially supportive and rich learning environments for all family members. Family learning has increasingly become a popular subject for research, and its public profile has been raised through Family Learning Weekends, Adult Learners' Week and initiatives such as Sure Start. However, if policies and strategies are to continue to improve the effectiveness of family learning, then they must be well informed by research. Family Learning: What Parents Think presents the findings from focus group discussions carried out with parents participating in organized family learning literacy and numeracy programs, as well as parents not involved in formal family learning. Their comments relate to definitions of family learning, motivations and barriers to learning, advantages and disadvantages of family learning to themselves, their children and others, how family learning courses can be successful, and how to encourage others to participate in family learning. Based on this evidence, recommendations are made relating to the marketing and design of family learning courses and the training of tutors.
