Americans are justly proud of their tradition of representative government. In fact, America's is the longest continuous representative government in existence. Ironically, it may be that, because of the two hundred uninterrupted years of the republic's existence, we take it for granted that we view its continuation as guaranteed. Although our republic has endured for more than two hundred years, it has not always existed in its present "form," it has not always represented many people who now routinely view its protections and guarantees as birthrights. The unlanded masses, women, blacks and other minorities, all were for a great part of our history not represented in the American body politic. Now all of these groups, at least legally speaking, are full participants in the body politic and in the public affairs of this country. This volume examines the development of the American notion of popular sovereignty from its colonial and revolutionary origins, from the days of its severely restricted meaning through its progress toward inclusion of more of "the people." Four distinguished commentators examine the social and political developments that have accompanied the growth and expansion of "the will of the people."

George Mason, whose Virginia Declaration of Rights served as a model for the U.S. Bill of Rights, was such an ardent proponent of federalism that he attacked the U.S. Constitution for its lack of true federalism. This volume in the George Mason Lecture Series examines both Mason's thought and the evolution of America's unique blend of federal principles. Contributors include: Linda Grant DePauw, Daniel J. Elazar, Robert B. Hawkins, Jr., Martin B. Cohen, Edwin R. Black.

An International Perspective On Human Rights written by Jack Richard Censer and has been published by University Press of America this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with History categories.

This book focuses on the fate of human rights outside of the United States and over time. The first two contributions center on the French experience, especially the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen of the French Revolution. The last two evaluate the way that the rights born in the eighteenth century evolved throughout the world during the last two hundred years. Although the articles attempt to characterize human rights, they disagree on how one ought to appreciate these liberties. Those articles on France raise questions regarding rights and suggest that in certain circumstances these freedoms can lead to certain unforeseen difficulties; they argue that the Declaration of the Rights of Man was the final step in solidifying a revolution in which the right to liberty was sacrificed to the right to equality. Confronting this position are the last two essays committed to a belief that in the infinite expansion of rights of all sorts lies the best path to human dignity. Contributors include Philippe Roger, Francois Furet, Ron Malevi, Louis Merkin and Goler Teal Butcher.

A Founding Father, a patriot in the Revolutionary War, a delegate from Virginia to the Constitutional Convention, and one of the driving forces behind the creation of the U.S. Bill of Rights, George Mason (1725-1792) worked passionately and diligently throughout his life, both as a private citizen and as a public servant, to ensure that government protected the inherent rights of the people. The Five George Masons, first published in 1975, provides a comprehensive overview of five generations of the Mason family, beginning with George Mason I, who fled England following the defeat of the Royalists at the second battle of Worcester in 1651, arriving in the Colony of Virginia in the early 1650s. Central to this volume, of course, is George Mason IV, who, while less celebrated than his fellow Virginians George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, was one of America’s outstanding thinkers, legislators, and writers; his ideals and legacy endure to this day. This second edition includes a new foreword as well as color photos and maps, while faithfully reproducing the original edition’s unique genealogical charts of the Mason family. In tracing the family history of the Masons, the book provides important context for understanding the life and work of George Mason IV, who wrote: "All men are by nature equally free and inde¬pendent, and have certain inherent rights." The Five George Masons serves as a uniquely valuable resource for histo¬rians, educators, genealogists, and all those interested in the history of Virginia and the early United States.
