It covers 70 poets and over 1,800 items (as of the end of July 1993). Most of the poets were first published commercially after the end of WWII; others were included because of their connection to Princeton, or because they were too important to be excluded. An introduction (about two pages) and small photograph introduce each poet. Really much more thrilling than it sounds, a pellucid companion to the contemporaries, and beautifully produced as well. Handlist of an exhibition held at Princeton University showing works by 70 writers -- including books, broadsides and ephemera such as postcard poems -- from an extensive collection of contemporary American poetry. Fifty-one of the living poets have contributed unpublished poems to the spring issue of the Princeton University Library Chronicle, and three - Stanley Kunitz, W.S. Merwin and Mark Strand -- have written prose pieces for the journal. Poems by John Berryman and May Swenson are also published for the first time in the Library Chronicle. Leonard L. Milberg, Princeton Class of 1953 provided the financial support for the collection. He describes himself reading this poetry "somewhat out of curiosity but mostly for pleasure. I loved the beautiful, varied, and clever ways that poets employed words; and I was fascinated by their often extraordinary imaginations."

This book examines the most salient and misunderstood aspect of twentieth-century poetry, free verse. Although the form is generally approached as if it were one indissoluble lump, it is actually a group of differing poetic genres proceeding from much different assumptions. Separate chapters on T.S. Eliot, Wallace Stevens, H.D., and William Carlos Williams elucidate many of these assumptions and procedures, while other chapters address more general theoretical questions and trace the continuity of Modern poetics in contemporary poetry. Taking a historical and aesthetic approach, this study demonstrates that many of the forms considered to have been invented in the Modern period actually extend underappreciated traditions. Not only does this book examine the classical influence on Modern poetry, it also features discussions of the poetics of John Milton, Abraham Cowley, Matthew Arnold, and a host of lesser-known poets. Throughout it is an investigation of the prosodic issues that free verse foregrounds, particularly those focusing on the reader's part in interpreting poetic rhythm.
