Escrita por Pero (Pedro) Vaz de Caminha (1450 – 1500), fidalgo português e escrivão oficial da esquadra de Pedro Álvares Cabral (1467 – 1520), a Carta é um dos documentos mais importantes da história dos descobrimentos portugueses. Em 1500, Caminha foi nomeado escrivão da feitoria a ser erguida em Calicute, na índia, razão pela qual se encontrava na nau capitânia da armada de Cabral naquele mesmo ano, quando a mesma encontrou o Brasil. Em 1817, o padre Manuel Aires do Casal fez uma cópia da carta e a publicou na imprensa, tornando-a pública e conhecida pela primeira vez. Sem dúvidas, a Carta do Descobrimento inaugura não apenas a nossa história enquanto nação, a nossa entrada na narrativa ocidental, mas também abre uma espécie de mitologia cultural brasileira no que diz respeito à natureza edênica, ao primitivismo indígena, ao índio cordial, ao contato ameno entre duas raças etc. A Coleção Vozes de Bolso – Literatura Brasileira se propõe a trazer ao público um novo tipo de trabalho em torno de grandes clássicos da literatura de língua portuguesa.
