Along with over 70 of Beethoven's own letters discovered since Emily Anderson's three-volume Letters of Beethoven, these documents provide new insights into the composer's personal life. Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), the protagonist of freedom for music, disentangled music from the control of the ruling class. In publishing his music and writing for the rising classes, Beethoven claimed freedom and expressed the emotions of the new rulers, the artists. The Eroica, Fidelio, and the piano works express the emotions of the new rulers - the intense love, the need for companionship of people, the forces that conspired to defeat the artist, and the strength and superiority of the artist in overcoming the weaknesses. The letters of Beethoven are the principal nonmusical expression of his personality in its relationship with the world of his time. In what he called the "dry letters of the alphabet," Beethoven depicted his fears, his loves, and his friendly relations: his fears of deafness and of corrupted texts by pirating printers; his loves, Bettina Brentano and Giulietta Guicciardi; and his friendly relations with Baron Zmeskall, Frau Nannette Streicher, and the music publishers Steiner and Company. He praises the poetry of Goethe and Schiller but condemns Goethe for his obeisance toward royalty. He solicits help during his perpetual trouble with his health and with his servants. He castigates publishers, sets prices for his works, and calculates letters of dedication. He expresses his love for his nephew, Carl, but documents the trouble that Carl was causing him by taking up his precious time. And although Beethoven liked to decorate the letters with musical openings and closings and an occasional song to the receiver, he increasingly signed his letters, "In haste."

In accompanying the present edition of the Letters of Ludwig van Beethoven with a few introductory remarks, I at once acknowledge that the compilation of these letters has cost me no slight sacrifices. I must also, however, mention that an unexpected Christmas donation, generously bestowed on me with a view to further my efforts to promote the science of music, enabled me to undertake one of the journeys necessary for my purpose, and also to complete the revision of the Letters and of the press, in the milder air and repose of a country residence, long since recommended to me for the restoration of my health, undermined by overwork. That, in spite of every effort, I have not succeeded in seeing the original of each letter, or even discovering the place where it exists, may well be excused, taking into consideration the slender capabilities of an individual, and the astonishing manner in which Beethoven's Letters are dispersed all over the world. At the same time, I must state that not only have the hitherto inaccessible treasures of Anton Schindler's "Beethoven's Nachlass" been placed at my disposal, but also other letters from private sources, owing to various happy chances, and the kindness and complaisance of collectors of autographs. I know better, however, than most people--being in a position to do so--that in the present work there can be no pretension to any thing approaching to a complete collection of Beethoven's Letters. The master, so fond of writing, though he often rather amusingly accuses himself of being a lazy correspondent, may very probably have sent forth at least double the amount of the letters here given, and there is no doubt whatever that a much larger number are still extant in the originals. The only thing that can be done at this moment, however, is to make the attempt to bring to light, at all events, the letters that could be discovered in Germany. The mass of those which I gradually accumulated, and now offer to the public (with the exception of some insignificant notes), appeared to me sufficiently numerous and important to interest the world, and also to form a substantial nucleus for any letters that may hereafter be discovered. On the other hand, as many of Beethoven's Letters slumber in foreign lands, especially in the unapproachable cabinets of curiosities belonging to various close-fisted English collectors, an entire edition of the correspondence could only be effected by a most disproportionate outlay of time and expense.

Beethoven's correspondences reveal much about his personality, inner struggles, and love of music. This edition includes all of the musical staves appended by the great composer to his letters. The second volume of Beethoven's letters begin with the composer in maturity. In these later years, several of his most accomplished and beautiful musical works were completed. It is clear from these written correspondences that music occupies a greater place in Beethoven's life; more frequently, he appends samples of and discusses musical phrasing and notation, giving readers insight into his methods of composition. Although Beethoven concealed his increasing deafness for years, it eventually became public knowledge. His ability to compose beautiful music was however undiminished, and demonstrated in concerts around Europe. Thought remarkable by the public, Beethoven nevertheless lived in quite modest circumstances, but felt deep appreciation for the acclaim with which he was held by various orchestral and philharmonic societies. In personal matters, Beethoven demonstrates great affection for his nephew Carl, whom he had won custody in the courts. However, the letters also reveal an irascible and controlling side to the composer: insistent that his nephew - whom he came to view as a son - be musically trained, the news that Carl's musical talents are negligible is a blow. Carl's subsequent intention to pursue a military career strains their relationship further. Despite these trials, Beethoven had the support of friends until the very end; his illness worsening, he was able to borrow money to pay for care, but it soon became clear he was on his deathbed. The great composer's final words comprise a short will, in which his estate is bequeathed to Carl. Ludwig van Beethoven died the next day, as a thunderstorm raged outside his apartment.

This is a collection of Beethoven's letters published in 1866. They were published from the collection of Ludwig Nohl, who also edited them. Nohl (1831--1885) was a German music scholar who famously published collections of the letters of Beethoven and Mozart, as well as extensive criticism of other great composers, including Richard Wagner. Nohl is most famous, however, as the Beethoven scholar who discovered "Für Elise," Beethoven's piano bagatelle. This collection includes his letters to the Archduke Rudolph of Austria, who took lessons from Beethoven and became his friend.
