In this book, a roster of leading scholars, military historians, cultural critics, and writers reassess the events and consequences of the Second World War in Belgium. Each chapter is devoted to a unique aspect of wartime experience and wartime heritage, offering a fascinating summary of all aspects of life and society in Belgium during WWII. These thoughtful and powerful essays explore the turbulent interwar period leading up to the German invasion, the subsequent occupation of Belgium, its liberation, and how the conflict is remembered. The key themes include: from war to war; the invasion of May 1940; the military conflict; (living with) occupation and terror; collaboration and resistance; the war economy; the persecution of the Jews; German cultural policy and the expropriation of works of art; the liberation in 1944 and 1945; the Ardennes offensive and the V-weapons; Year Zero after the war; the post-war processing of the collective national trauma. In the Campine (Kempen) during the liberation of the north of Belgium, the British had encountered severe German resistance for the first time since Normandy. In the township of Geel, which is located between two canals, the clash between the two adversaries was very hard. They fought what nowadays is known as the 'Battle for Geel.' Why is this battle known to be fierce? What was the course of this battle? How is it situated in the global Allied and German strategy? Which units were standing against each other? When you are visiting the town of Geel today, it is hard to image that you are walking around in one of the fiercest battlefields of the second world war in Flanders. During 3 weeks in September 1944, British and German troops fought against each other with tooth and nail. They engaged tanks, troops and lots of artillery. They fought for every inch...

The liberation of Belgium by Allied troops in September 1944 marked the end of a harsh German Occupation, but also the beginning of a turbulent and decisive period in the history of the country. There would be no easy transition to peace. Instead, the rival political forces of King Leopold III and his supporters, the former government in exile in London, and the Resistance movements which had emerged during the Occupation confronted each other in a bitter struggle for political ascendancy. The subsequent few years were dominated by an almost continual air of political and social crisis as Resistance demonstrations, strikes, and protests for and against the King appeared to threaten civil war and the institutional dissolution of the country. And yet by 1947 a certain stability had been achieved: the Resistance groups had been marginalised, the Communist Party was excluded from government, the King languished in unwilling exile in Switzerland, and, most tangibly, the pre-war political parties and the parliamentary political regime had been restored. In this substantial contribution to the history of the liberation era in Europe, Martin Conway provides the first account, based on substantial new archival material, of this process of political normalisation, which provided the basis for the integration of Belgium into the post-war West European political order. That success, however, came at a cost: the absence of any substantial political reform after the Second World War exacerbated the tensions between the different social classes, linguistic communities, and regions within Belgium, providing the basis for the gradual unravelling of the Belgian nation-state which occurred over the second half of the twentieth century.
