Excerpt from The Library, Vol. 1 His first communication depicts his progress up the Thames, which he regards as greatly surpassing even the charming banks Of the Elbe. Then he disembarks near Dartford, whence, with two companions, he posts to London, behind a round-batted postillion with a nosegay in his bosom He is delighted with the first view he gets of an English soldier, in his red uniform, his hair cut short and combed back on his forehead so as to afford a full view of his fine broad manly face. He is interested also to see two boys engaged in the national sport of boxing; and he marvels at the huge gateway-like sign-posts of the village inns. Passing over Westminster Bridge, he does not, like Wordsworth, burst into a sonnet, but he is impressed (as who would not be!) by that un equalled coup d'eril. The prospect from this bridge alone (he says) seems to afford one the epitome of a journey, or a voyage in miniature, as containing something of everything that most usually occurs on a journey. Presently, a little awed by the prodigious great ness and gloom of the houses (which remind him of Leipzig), he finds lodgings in George Street, Strand, with a tailor's widow, not very far. Excerpt from The Library World, Vol. 1 The lectures on cataloguing, given under the auspices of the Education Committee of the Library Association, by Mr. John Macfarlane of the British Museum, were completed some little time ago, and an examina tion was held of the students who attended. The results of this examination have not yet been published. We shall be pleased to print in this magazine a brief summary of these lectures by any student who has made sufficient notes; and we will give a prize of half-a guinea for the best abstract not exceeding one page of the library world. Abstracts to reach the Editor not later than July 18. Mr. J. Henry quinn, Librarian of the Chelsea Public Libraries, is engaged on a Manual of Library Cataloguing and Indexing, which will include instructions for the preparation and publication of dictionary catalogues, library bulletins, and class guides.
