El 19 de octubre de 1992 la policía alemana descubrió los cadáveres de Petra y de su compañero Gert Bastian en su casa de Bonn (Alemania). Ambos habían muerto de un disparo casi tres semanas antes, el 1 de octubre. Este suceso conmovió a Alemania, a Europa y al mundo entero. Las investigaciones no llegaron a determinar cómo se produjeron las muertes y la hipótesis oficial afirmó que se había tratado de un suicidio consentido por ambas partes: Bastian habría disparado contra Petra y luego contra sí mismo. Sin embargo, esta versión no llegó a convencer a todos y se empezaron a extender otras hipótesis en las que se señalaba la posible participación de la CIA, de la Stasi o de grandes empresarios vinculados a la energía nuclear. Todavía hoy no se sabe qué es lo que ocurrió realmente. The Western tradition of excluding women from leadership and disparaging their ability to lead has persisted for centuries, not least in Germany. Even today, resistance to women holding power is embedded in literary, cultural, and historical values that presume a fundamental opposition between the adjective "female" and the substantive "leader."
