David Livingstone was a Scottish physician and pioneer Christian missionary with the London Missionary Society. He was also an explorer in Africa and one of the most popular British heroes of the late 19th-century Victorian era. This biography was prepared by the British historian and a member of the Parliament, C. Silvester Horne. The author tried hard to portray Livingston from lesser-known sides of his personality: as an abolitionist, researcher, and scientist.

Excerpt from Life and Explorations of David Livingstone The cent success of the unique expedition of the new-york Herald newspaper in search of Dr. Livingstone, the most dis tinguished of African missionaries, and modern travellers, has given renewed interest to a continent which has been well described as the division of the world which is the most interesting, and about which we know the least. To supply the popular demand fotin formation in regard to Africa, the explorations of Dr. Livingstone, the Herald expedition, and subjects most intimately connected therewith, the following volume has been prepared. It will be seen that Dr. Livingstone himself, and Mr. Stanley, the conductor of the Herald expedition, have been largely quoted in the compila tion of the work. No one has written of Africa more intelligently, graphically, or fully, than Dr. Livingstone, and none so recently as Mr. Stanley. They are, of course, the principal authorities for this volume, as they are the best that can be had, but the te searches of others have been used whenever necessary to add in terest to the subject, and to make this book as nearly a complete account of all that is now known of Africa as possible. As such, it is now given to the public in the confident belief that it will supply a want generally felt, and which has often been expressed by the journals of our own and other countries, and other recog nized representatives of public Opinion. No book of travels is more interesting than the great work of Dr. Livingstone, and none, we think, which contains so much information valuable to the reading world. Excerpt from The Last Journals of David Livingstone, in Central Africa: From Eighteen Hundred and Sixty-Five to His Death IN the midst of the universal sorrow caused by the intelligence that Dr. Livingstone had lost his life at the farthest point to which he had penetra ted in his search for the true sources of the Nile, a faint hope was indulged that some of his journals might survive the disaster: this hope, I rejoice to say, has been realized beyond the most sanguine expectations. It is due, in the first place, to his native attendants, whose faithfulness has placed his last writings at our disposal, and also to the reader, before he launches forth upon a series of travels and scientific geographical records of the most extraordinary character, to say that in the following narrative of seven years' continuous work and new discovery no break whatever occurs. We have not to deplore the loss, by accident or carelessness, of a single entry, from the time of Livingstone's departure from Zanzibar, in the begin ning of 1866, to the day when his note - book dropped from his hand, in the village of Ilala, at the end of April, 187 3.
