Excerpt from The Life of John Sebastian Bach in Relation to His Work as a Church Musician and Composer: A Lecture After his apprenticeship was out, Hans returned to his native village as a skilled violin player, married the daughter of the local innkeeper and earned his livelihood partly by music and partly by carpet-weaving. The more divine of these two arts was, however, evidently his real profession, as the description "Spielmann" - player - attached to his name in the parish register sufficiently shows. He was frequently summoned to the neighbouring towns, Gotha, Arnstadt, Erfurt, Eisenach, to assist the local musicians, and must have attained no small general popularity, as appears by his portrait having been twice taken. A couplet attached to one of these pictures in which he was represented playing on the violin testifies to his having had an humorous vein in his character which came out perceptibly in his music. He died of the plague in 1626. Up to the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War the condition of Thuringian peasants was a fairly prosperous one, but, as Spitta writes, "The death of Hans Bach in 1626 brings us to the commencement of the time during which Thuringia had to suffer and bleed under the fearful war scourge. This monumental study of Johann Sebastian Bach ranks among the great classics of musicology. Since its first publication in 1873–80, it has remained the basic work on Bach and the foundation of later research and study. The three-part treatment describes in chronological sequence practically everything that is known of the composer's life: his ancestry, his immediate family, his associations, his employers, and the countless occasions on which his musical genius emerged. Author Philipp Spitta accompanies this biographical material with quotations from primary sources: correspondence, family records, diaries, official documents, and more. In addition to biographical data, Spitta reviews Bach's musical production, with analyses of more than 500 pieces, covering all the important works. More than 450 musical excerpts are included in the main text, and a 43-page musical supplement illustrates longer passages. Despite the scholarly nature of this work, it also has the rare distinction of being a study that can be read with considerable enjoyment and great profit by every serious music lover, with or without a substantial background in the history of music or musical theory.

For more than 100 years, the name of Johann Sebastian Bach has been considered among the most highly regarded of all composers. The holy cantor church musician has been written about in many books. So, it might be difficult for some of us to imagine, but for several generations after his death, Bach had been forgotten. What remained of his vast number of works gathered dust in private collections or distant archives. Many of his works were discarded; in fact, some found their way to a butcher shop and are reported to have been used as wrapping paper. It took a twenty-year-old musician who would become as well known as Bach to bring about an interest in his works. In 1829, Felix Mendelssohn performed the St. Matthew Passion, and revived interest in the long-forgotten composer. The genius of Bach was finally recognized by the world.
