First published in the 4th century A.D., Anthony the Great's biography was authored by Christian Saint Athanasius of Alexandria. Since its original release, the book has helped spread the beliefs, practices and arduous faith of Anthony the Great to a wider audience. A significant progenitor of the monastic tradition, Saint Anthony lived an ascetic lifestyle in the deserts of Egypt. Although not the earliest of religious figures committed to this tradition, through his actions and preaching Anthony helped popularise and spread principles that would contribute heavily to the establishment of Christian monastic orders in Europe and beyond. One famous event in St. Anthony's life was his encounter with the supernatural in the remote reaches of the Egyptian desert. This occurrence, wherein the otherworldly presence tried to tempt him away from his spartan philosophy of living, has experienced much coverage in Western art and literature. The translation to English contained in this edition is by Philip Schaff and Henry Wace; theologians who held Anthony the Great in high esteem.

The biography of Anthony's life by Athanasius of Alexandria helped to spread the concept of Christian monasticism, particularly in Western Europe via its Latin translations. He is often erroneously considered the first Christian monk, but as his biography and other sources make clear, there were many ascetics before him. Anthony was, however, the among the first known to go into the wilderness (about AD 270), which seems to have contributed to his renown. Accounts of Anthony enduring supernatural temptation during his sojourn in the Eastern Desert of Egypt inspired the often-repeated subject of the temptation of St. Anthony in Western art and literature.

Many Catholic Churches have statues of great saints, holy people who have left their mark on the Church by the way they have lived lives of heroic faith and sanctity, and thus have inspired others to do the same. One of these great saints is St. Anthony of Padua. He is often depicted holding the child Jesus in his arms, or with Jesus at his side, due to the fact that Jesus often appeared as a child to St. Anthony. He was not born "Anthony" and was not born in Padua, Italy, but his life and journey eventually brought him to those two realities. He was born into a wealthy family and began to pursue a religious life from a very young age, entering a monastery at the tender age of 15. The time in which he lived was fraught with political uncertainty and religious tensions between Catholics, Muslims, and the Jewish people in medieval Spain. The Catholics were in the process of reclaiming the Iberian peninsula, and began a campaign of sending missionaries to North Africa and crusaders to the Holy Land. In the midst of all this, St. Anthony knew clearly that he wanted to be an Augustinian monk, but he would study, switch religious orders, and become acquainted with the great St. Francis of Assisi after becoming a Franciscan. He was perhaps best known for his incredible skill in preaching, a skill that he came to discover almost by pure accident. His life was one of teaching, preaching, and simple, humble faith. After his death, he quickly earned the name "Saint" and centuries later became one of the "Doctors of the Church," a great honor reserved for particularly holy and influential souls. Though Saint Anthony lived a relatively short life, his intense faith and theological knowledge enabled him to become an accomplished preacher and teacher, earning him the devotion of millions of Catholics throughout history. History in 30: The Life of St. Anthony of Padua quickly but comprehensively examines the remarkable impact St. Anthony had on Christianity.

2013 Reprint of 1950 edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. The present volume contains the most important document of early monasticism, "The Life of St. Antony," whose author is no less a man than the great St. Athanasius himself. Antony, generally considered the father of Christian monasticism, was born circa 250 a.d. to well-to-do parents in Middle Egypt. Athanasius is counted as one of the four Great Doctors of the Church in the Roman Catholic Church as well as one of the Great Doctors of the Church in Eastern Orthodoxy, where he is also labeled the "Father of Orthodoxy." He is also celebrated by many Protestants, who label him "Father of The Canon." Athanasius is venerated as a Christian saint, whose feast day is 2 May in Western Christianity, 15 May in the Coptic Orthodox Church, and 18 January in the other Eastern Orthodox Churches. He is venerated by the Roman Catholic Church, Oriental and Eastern Orthodox churches, the Lutherans, and the Anglican Communion.
