The Life Of The Patriarch Tarasios written by Ignatios (the Deacon) and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

The patriarch Tarasios holds a key position in the ending of the first period of Iconoclasm in Byzantium, with the seventh Oecumenical Council at Nicaea in 787. His Life forms an equally key source for the history and culture of the Byzantine world in the eighth and ninth centuries. This book provides a full introduction, a critical edition with English translation, and a detailed commentary and indexes for this important document. The introduction first places the text within the framework of other patriarchal biographies composed in the period c.850-950. Dr Efthymiadis then looks at Tarasios himself, as layman, patriarch, and saint, and provides a biographical sketch of the author of the Life, Ignatios the Deacon, together with a discussion of the date and reasons for the work's composition. In addition, this new text and translation makes more accessible a highly sophisticated example of Byzantine prose.

Saint Methodios of Constantinople: A Study of His Life and Works is the first full-scale study in English of the life and work of the great Patriarch of Constantinople, St. Methodios the Confessor (843-847). It was under him that the end of the second and final stage of the iconoclastic dispute came about. Patriarch Methodios was also responsible for establishing the "Feast of the Triumph of Orthodoxy," through which the Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates the restoration of the use of icons in the Church (1st Sunday of Great Lent) and solemnly reaffirms the famous Synodikon of Orthodoxy. The present volume provides details on the life and times of this great Patriarch, the events that led to the triumph of Orthodoxy and the celebrations of the Sunday of Orthodoxy, including the Synodikon. It also provides a thorough and scholarly discussion of the consequences of the restoration of the icons and of the criticism which the Studite monks raised against the Patriarch. More importantly, it discusses the ecclesiological issue that was connected with the iconoclastic dispute, involving such church personalities as Patriarchs Germanos I, Tarasios, Nikephoros I and Methodios, as well as Theodore the Studite. In the last chapter, entitled "Literary Harvest," the author explores through detailed analysis and discussion the various literary productions of the Patriarch. All of these, and especially the hagiographical and liturgical texts, reveal the great ecclesiastical and pastoral personality of St. Methodios, as well as his pivotal role in resolving the iconoclastic crisis and specifying the course of the church's path and mission in history.

This book deals with popular Orthodoxy during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods, approaching the material from a historical and anthropological perspective. The discussion takes as its starting point a letter of Leo Allatios, the seventeenth-century author and scriptor of the Vatican Library. The early chapters of the book focus on Allatios and the western intellectual background in which the work was written, while later chapters consider popular beliefs and practices surrounding childstealing demons, revenants, spirits of place and popular healing. This book provides the first detailed treatment of a major source for post Byzantine popular Orthodoxy, offering valuable insights into the relationships between laity and clergy, Orthodoxy and Catholicism, religion and natural philosophy during the seventeenth century.

The Argument Of Psellos Chronographia written by Anthony Kaldellis and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-11 with Philosophy categories.

This book is a philosophical interpretation of Michael Psellos' Chronographia, an acknowledged masterpiece of Byzantine literature. Anthony Kaldellis argues that although the Chronographia contains a fascinating historical narrative; it is really a disguised philosophical work which, if read carefully, reveals Psellos' revolutionary views on politics and religion. Kaldellis exposes the rhetorical techniques with which Psellos veils his unorthodoxy, and demonstrates that the inner message of the text challenges the Church's supremacy over the intellectual and political life of Byzantium. Psellos consciously articulates a secular vision of Imperial politics, and seeks to liberate philosophy from the constraints of Christian theology. The analysis is lucid and should be accessible to anyone with a general knowledge of Byzantine civilization. It should interest all who study the history of ancient and medieval philosophy.
