Halodule wrightii had the highest light requirement at 24-27% of surface irradiance, and H. engelmannii exhibited the lowest light requirement at 8-10% of surface irradiance. Variation in seagrass light requirements is attributed to differences in morphology and physiology, as well as light histories in specific locations. Water quality characteristics that directly affect light attenuation showed a significant negative correlation with seagrass distribution and abundance. These results confirm the need to address links between anthropogenic nutrient loads, eutrophication, reduced light penetration, and loss of seagrasses and the services they provide.
