Excerpt from Limerick and Its Sieges As other notes concerning the places of chief historic interest in the County of Limerick, were put together by the writer more for his own information than with any eye towards their publication, at least in a book form. Whatever time could be spared from other occupatlons was employed some years ago in collecting and throwing into readable form whatever could be got together respecting the castles and abbeys, so many of which are to be found dotted over the County of Limerick, and con cerning which so little is popularly known. In the pursuit of such a study the City of Limerick must of course have occupied the most important place, for to omit it would be like leavmg out the part of Hamlet in the play. The whole was to some ex tent completed and the manuscript had been laid aside for the last five or six years, though portions have occasionally found their way into print. When. Excerpt from Orange and Green: A Tale of the Boyne and Limerick My Dear Lads: The subject of Ireland is one which has for some years been a very prominent one, and is likely, I fear, for some time yet to occupy a large share of public attention. For many years the laws in Ireland and the rights of Irishmen have been identical with those which we enjoy in England. The discontent manifested in the troubles of recent years has had its root in an older sense of grievance, for which there was, unhappily, only too abundant reason. The great proportion of the soil of Ireland was taken from the original owners and handed over to Cromwell's followers, and for years the land that still remained in the hands of Irishmen was subject to the covetousness of a party of greedy intriguers, who had sufficient influence to sway the proceedings of government. The result was the rising of Ireland, nominally in defense of the rights of King James, but really an effort of despair on the part of those who deemed their religion, their property, and even their lives threatened by this absolute ascendency of the Protestant party in the government of the country. I have drawn my information from a variety of sources; but as I wished you to see the matter from the Irish point of view I have drawn most largely from the history of those events by Mr. O'Driscol, published sixty years ago. There is, however, but little difference of opinion between Irish and English authors as to the general course of the war, or as to the atrocious conduct of William's army of foreign mercenaries toward the people of Ireland. Excerpt from More Busy Days: Dr. Andrew Carnegie at Dingwall, Tain, Kilmarnock, Govan, Waterford, Limerick, Cork, Barrow in 1903 Within the building now being erected here, when we have got it equipped with first-class literature, we and our successors can readily become familiar with the thoughts and with the deeds of the intellectual giants of the past and of the present. We may thus hope that incalculable good will accrue to many here and beyond our town through our prospective Carnegie Public Library. (cheers) We have then the best of reasons to rejoice at the prospect of a library and to hail it with the greatest possible pleasure. We have indeed the best of reasons to feel intensely grateful to the generous donor. (cheers) Fellow-citizens, I feel sure I also express your Views, as I do my own, when I say that we strongly feel we are very specially honored in having Mrs. Carnegie come here today to lay its foundation stone. (loud cheers.) I know that I can on your behalf, as I do for myself, assure Dr. Carnegie and Mrs. Carnegie that we very specially ap preciate this signal honor. (cheers) Provost Macrae, addressing Mrs. Carnegie, said: I have the pleasure and honor of handing you this sil ver trowel and mallet with which you will kindly fa vor us in laying this foundation stone. Wolfe S History A Family Story written by Brendan Wolfe and has been published by Lulu.com this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09 with History categories.

Wolfe's History, by the author of Finding Bix (2017), wraps its arms around a single, sprawling Irish and American family. In an opening essay, Wolfe introduces a cast of larger-than-life characters-from an Old West barkeep and a Gold Rush pharmacist to an IRA fugitive and a British recruit whose loyalties are tested during the Easter Rising. Together these fast-talking, writerly cousins live intricate lives that move quickly between past and present-complete with periodic and sudden outbursts of violence. A man is set ablaze on the prairie. A Jesuit is tortured in Dublin Castle. In the author's sure hands, their stories are converted into something broader and more searching than just a single family's journey. He wonders what binds the Wolfes together in the first place and whether the experiences of his own immediate family subvert the connections he feels with his ancestors. A biographical dictionary and fifty pages of family trees complete this impressive volume.

The Collected Letters Of George Gissing 1902 1903 written by George Gissing and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

For many years, the only Gissing letters available to the public were those in the modest selection of letters to his family published in 1927. In the following years a good number were published separately in such places as journals, memoirs, and sales catalogues, but like the single and small groups of unpublished letters scattered in libraries around the world, they remained in practical terms inaccessible. Even though in recent years small groups of letters to individual correspondents have come into print, the rapidly growing numbers of Gissing readers and scholars now feel the need for access to his letters in an edition comparable to those of his contemporary novelist friends, Thomas Hardy and Joseph Conrad. In this edition, all the Gissing letters that could be found, published and unpublished, have been brought together from all known sources: private and public collections, journals, newspapers, memoirs, biographies, and sales catalogues. The important advantage is not only that they have at last been brought together, but also that they are placed chronologically and given a uniform editorial context which provides a coherence lacking in letters separately published. A significant feature of this edition is that it also contains, whenever they are available, letters to Gissing which are of great help in recording his life during the times when his own letters have been lost or destroyed. With the recent publication of Gissing's diary, his commonplace book, and other smaller pieces, this edition becomes the final major publication of Gissing papers known to exist, and certainly the most significant record of his life, his mind, and his art. It will be of crucial importance to any future biographers, and of the greatest value to those who want to study Gissing's novels in relation to his life.

"Time travel, UFOs, mysterious planets, stigmata, rock-throwing poltergeists, huge footprints, bizarre rains of fish and frogs-nearly a century after Charles Fort's Book of the Damned was originally published, the strange phenomenon presented in this book remains largely unexplained by modern science. Through painstaking research and a witty, sarcastic style, Fort captures the imagination while exposing the flaws of popular scientific explanations. Virtually all of his material was compiled and documented from reports published in reputable journals, newspapers and periodicals because he was an avid collector. Charles Fort was somewhat of a recluse who spent most of his spare time researching these strange events and collected these reports from publications sent to him from around the globe. This was the first of a series of books he created on unusual and unexplained events and to this day it remains the most popular. If you agree that truth is often stranger than fiction, then this book is for you"--Taken from Good Reads website.
