Excerpt from The Link, Vol. 9 The boys in Tank Town Tavern were giving old Lonz a bad time again. When, as always, he couldn't think of an answer, he'd turn his scrawny little neck slightly to the left, wrap his feet tight around the bar stool and spit vehemently and accurately into the old brass spittoon alongside the black potbellied stove. Most times he didn't mind. He'd park his little red, white, and blue wagon, that flew the American flag as proudly as any battlewagon, outside the tavern and come in and drink beer and josh with the boys. "What makes you such an all-fired American?" they would ask him. "What's your country ever done for you? Look at you now, an old man, hauling junk in a little old kid's wagon and getting most of your grub out of the market dump, stuff that people who aren't half so crazy about this country wouldn't even touch. What's so hot about that?" He didn't have any answer for them except that he was proud to be able to make his own way and pay for his own beer. How could he tell them that it seemed good just to stand and breathe the free air that came whipping in off the bay? It just seemed sweeter somehow than the air had ever been in the Old Country where he was raised. He didn't know why. He just knew it was so. Ah, the fellows that hung around here, he didn't mind what they said. They didn't mean it, and he knew they'd be the first to argue the other way if they thought that would rile him. It was just all part of the tavern fun. They wouldn't even bother kidding him if they didn't like him. Old Lonz knew that. But tonight he was mad. His deep blue eyes turned midnight blue, and his prickly two-day growth of white beard was bristling out of the red in his face. There was a newcomer in the crowd. He looked like a seaman, big and rough but with nervous hands and a cocky way that would have been taken out of him a long time ago if he hadn't been so big. Old Lonz was mad because the stranger's laughter was tinged with a sneer and he had remarked, "You're an old fool!" in such a way that even the other boys had not liked it and had become silent. He gripped his glass so hard that Blackie the bartender leaned toward him and said gently, "Take it easy, Lonz." "I'd like to spit in his eye!" Lonz muttered. "I'd like to spit right in his eye!" He planked his glass down on the counter, sloshing the bit that was left, wiped his hands on his stiff coat and climbed off the stool. Excerpt from The Link, Vol. 9: February March, 1951 And then I heard it clearly. My name! Surely my name. The people were shouting my name. They had not forgotten me. My people. My eyes swam in a mist of weakness. I - who had in bitterness called them weak and lazy, dreamers and fools, cowards, vacillating and stupid. And they had remembered me. My people! Excerpt from The Link, Vol. 9: December, 1951 Even the greenest boot knows that chief boatswain's mates do not customarily force their friendship on lowly seamen. At the very least, if a chief so loses his sense of what is proper as to befriend a seaman, the seaman is well advised to show his awareness of the unusual honor that is being bestowed upon him. When Seaman Tom Sullivan, lying on his cot at the Naval Base, Yokosuka, Japan, saw Chief Boatswain's Mate Duff approaching him in the otherwise empty room, he did exactly what you would not have expected him to do. Although Chief Duff's ruddy face was distorted into a grimace he foolishly believed to be a friendly smile, Sullivan let the comic book fall from his limp hand, pulled the blanket over his face, and commenced snoring in an earth-shaking vibrato. Duff seated himself on the edge of an empty cot and tentatively thumped a hillock he judged to be Sullivan's shoulder. "You know what, Sully? The day after tomorrow's Christmas." There was no answer. "We got a pretty good lash-up here, Sully," Duff went on. "The barracks are warm, the sacks are okay, the chow's good, and I'm even about ready to admit that the Japs are pretty good joes. But if there's one time of the year I want to get away from the United States Navy, that one time of the year's Christmas." He paused, but still there was no response from under the blanket. "Sully, you and me are going ashore for Christmas," Duff said, speaking slowly for greater effect. The blanket heaved convulsively, as if an electric current had suddenly been shot through the body underneath. The rhythm of the snoring was broken for a moment, and then started up again. Yet, it was plain that Duff was making progress. The blanket had shifted and Sullivan's close-cropped red hair and shaggy eyebrows had come into view. But the single eye that was visible was still screwed determinedly shut. Duff's voice grew even oilier. "Remember that trip we took to Atami? Just this afternoon I got to thinking about the time we had." Sullivan's eyelid flickered open and a blue eye stared coldly at Duff. "I remember it all right," a grim voice said from under the blanket. "When I started out on that trip I was a petty officer first class in the United States Navy; when I came back I was on the way to being a seaman. I'm not saying whose fault it was. All I'm doing is telling you I haven't forgotten that trip." "Aw, Sully," Duff protested. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Link, Vol. 9: August-September, 1951 Although it was acool morning, sweat was heavy inside Red Sloane's gloves as he started downward. On a steel beam two stories below, Joe Regan was holding a blueprint at arm's length. Three floors below him was the rivet ing gang, then empty 'air. Glancing up, Red saw the long iron beam. A cable hooked about its middle, it swung with slow balance. The cable jerked suddenly taut as the derrick stopped, and the iron stick bounced at the end of the steel strands. Red felt a sick paralysis deep in his stomach' That was what had happened to Tony. The derrick Operator had halted the cable pay out with a jerk, and the beam had hit Tony. Nine stories through the skeleton steel he had fallen. Red felt his throat muscles tighten as he remembered the long scream of horror. When you stop watching your feet and start eyeing the ground, quit! That was what Joe Regan, the foreman, had told him last night. Joe knew he was afraid. As foreman, -he knew those things. He had to know which were the best riveters, connectors, and riggers. He had to know which men were good on high iron and which were afraid. The lives of the whole steel crew could depend on that knowledge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Link, Vol. 9: April-May, 1951 The Japanese used pigeons to their great advantage in the russo-japanese War in 1904. The Japanese, with their characteristic cunning and ingenuity, discovered that homing pigeons could be taught to fly back to a mobile loft in new surroundings. During the past two world wars the majority of pigeons flew their messages to such mobile lofts. Through a highly successful training program, the U. S. Armed forces were able to get 95 percent of their pigeon messages through. Before World War II, pigeons had been trained only to make daylight flights, but the birds are now trained to fly at night. And there are birds that will carry their messages in both directions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book has evolved by processes of selection and expansion from its predecessor, Practical Scanning Electron Microscopy (PSEM), published by Plenum Press in 1975. The interaction of the authors with students at the Short Course on Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Microanalysis held annually at Lehigh University has helped greatly in developing this textbook. The material has been chosen to provide a student with a general introduction to the techniques of scanning electron microscopy and x-ray microanalysis suitable for application in such fields as biology, geology, solid state physics, and materials science. Following the format of PSEM, this book gives the student a basic knowledge of (1) the user-controlled functions of the electron optics of the scanning electron microscope and electron microprobe, (2) the characteristics of electron-beam-sample inter actions, (3) image formation and interpretation, (4) x-ray spectrometry, and (5) quantitative x-ray microanalysis. Each of these topics has been updated and in most cases expanded over the material presented in PSEM in order to give the reader sufficient coverage to understand these topics and apply the information in the laboratory. Throughout the text, we have attempted to emphasize practical aspects of the techniques, describing those instru ment parameters which the microscopist can and must manipulate to obtain optimum information from the specimen. Certain areas in particular have been expanded in response to their increasing importance in the SEM field. Thus energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometry, which has undergone a tremendous surge in growth, is treated in substantial detail.

This open access book draws the big picture of how population change interplays with politics across the world from 1990 to 2040. Leading social scientists from a wide range of disciplines discuss, for the first time, all major political and policy aspects of population change as they play out differently in each major world region: North and South America; Sub-Saharan Africa and the MENA region; Western and East Central Europe; Russia, Belarus and Ukraine; East Asia; Southeast Asia; subcontinental India, Pakistan and Bangladesh; Australia and New Zealand. These macro-regional analyses are completed by cross-cutting global analyses of migration, religion and poverty, and age profiles and intra-state conflicts. From all angles, this book shows how strongly contextualized the political management and the political consequences of population change are. While long-term population ageing and short-term migration fluctuations present structural conditions, political actors play a key role in (mis-)managing, manipulating, and (under-)planning population change, which in turn determines how citizens in different groups react.

Contemporary Bioethics written by Mohammed Ali Al-Bar and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-27 with Medical categories.

This book discusses the common principles of morality and ethics derived from divinely endowed intuitive reason through the creation of al-fitr' a (nature) and human intellect (al-‘aql). Biomedical topics are presented and ethical issues related to topics such as genetic testing, assisted reproduction and organ transplantation are discussed. Whereas these natural sources are God’s special gifts to human beings, God’s revelation as given to the prophets is the supernatural source of divine guidance through which human communities have been guided at all times through history. The second part of the book concentrates on the objectives of Islamic religious practice – the maqa' sid – which include: Preservation of Faith, Preservation of Life, Preservation of Mind (intellect and reason), Preservation of Progeny (al-nasl) and Preservation of Property. Lastly, the third part of the book discusses selected topical issues, including abortion, assisted reproduction devices, genetics, organ transplantation, brain death and end-of-life aspects. For each topic, the current medical evidence is followed by a detailed discussion of the ethical issues involved.
