New Companions. New Fun. An Awesome New Adventure It’s summer; Jack, convinced that the Kingdom of Sudana is safe at last, is only thinking about football and his forthcoming holiday to France. That is until people with the name Jack Burnside are attacked and murdered. When Jack’s home is also destroyed, there can be little doubt who is behind it – Mendorun. Yet, how can that be … Mendorun is dead, isn’t he? Jack must warn Jacob but how? The Kingdom of Sudana lies a whole starlit night away and Bud, the camel, has been reduced to slivers at wood. His only chance is to find Adolphus, one of Nelson’s guardian lions, and bring him to life. Jack doesn’t count on taking all four lions – and Nelson – and his best mates, Andy and Rob. It all sounds the greatest of fun until the Hibou strikes … Then it get serious. The Lions of Trafalgar is the third book in the Jack Burnside trilogy: the other two are, A Dangerous Game and The Bird Children.

How did humans develop the capacity for symbolic imagination? In this ground-breaking book, Warren Colman provides a reformulation of archetypal symbols as emergent from humans’ embodied and affective engagement with their social and material environment. Beginning with the oldest known figurative image in the world, the 40,000-year-old Lion Man of Hohlenstein-Stadel in Germany, he traces the emergence of symbolic imagination through the origins of language, the growth of human sociality and co-operation, and the creative use of material objects, from the earliest stone tools through the cave paintings and figures of Upper Paleolithic Europe and beyond. This leads to a consideration of how the imaginal world of the spirit may have come into being, not as separate from the material world but through active participation within a world alive with meaning.

The book is an autobiography of the writer who from an early age was a prolific note keeper, a habit which enabled him to amass thousands of written pages of information which he incorporated into this text. In the storyline are to be found descriptions of incidents he witnessed during the period 1928-56. The books cover is a photograph of Gibraltar taken in 1890 from Campamento Spain and before Gibraltars harbour was built. It shows the fortification walls as the French and Spaniards would have seen them during the Great Siege (1789-83). The Irish Flag represents his wifes birthplace and the Union Jack his. Most of the photographs in the book are from the familys archives and were taken when photography was in its primitive and non-pixel stage. In his young life the writer, oblivious to the landings occurring in the nearby Port of Algeciras, missed the advancing army of General Franco by a few hours despite the fact that gunfire could be heard a few miles away. Four years later he was to cross a devastated Spain on his way to boarding school in England. On that occasion they were also unaware that Hitlers armies were testing the Dutch defences before coming down in top gear. Their experiences in wartime Britain, the doodlebug, the North West blitz, his Stonyhurst College experience and the aftermath of peace are all recorded. The writer talks about the changes that took place in Gibraltar and his fathers election to the 1st legislative Council as the only candidate elected on the 1st count. The Queens visit to Gibraltar and their connections with the Maharaj of Jodhpur during the last days of Imperial Britain are also described. The book is one of the selected Alumni stories for the tercentenary celebrations of the School of Physics at Trinity College Dublin 2011.
