At VII this Morning landed safely at Dighton. 15. Carted my goods to M Whitmarshes, half of whose house I have hired for sixteen Dollars a year. 16. Lodged with my family in my own hired House. 17. Mr. Channing brot in the agreeable but almost incredible News, that yesterday, the Kings Troops evacuated Boston: and 500 of ours having had the smallpox entered and took possession of it. Confirmed by repeated Reports from Taunton all Day. 19. Cdl. Ezra Richmond at XI A.M. informed me that a man is arrived who lodged in Boston the night before last, says 1500 of our Troops entered Boston on Lordsday and that the Pltmder Desolation was not so bad as we had heard. Mr. just from the Camp told me he saw our troops enter Boston on Iisday. This Afternoon I rode to Taunton. In the Evening we saw a fire in the North. 20. Excerpt from The Literary Diary of Ezra Stiles, D.D., LL. D, Vol. 1: President of Yale College; January 1, 1769 March 13, 1776 Ezra Stiles, the author of the following Diary, was the son of the Rev. Isaac Stiles, of the parish of North Haven, in New Haven, Connecticut, by his first wife Kezia Taylor, and was born on November 29th, 1727. He was graduated at Yale College in 1746, and then pursued further studies in New Haven. He was licensed to preach on the 28th of May, 1749, and the same week entered on a tutorship in Yale College, which he retained until his acceptance of a call to the pastorate of the Second Congregational Church in Newport, Rhode Island, where he was ordained and installed, on October 22,1755. The following Diary was begun there in 1769. He married, February 10, 1757, Elizabeth, daughter of Colonel John Hubbard, of New Haven; and at the date of the opening of this Diary had the following children: Elizabeth, or Betsey, born April, 1758; Ezra, born March, 1759; Kezia, born September, 1760; Emilia, born April, 1762; Isaac, born August, 1763; Ruth, born August, 1765; Mary, or Polly, born August, 1767. He was of a slight physical frame, - his height, 5 feet, 41/2 inches, his weight under 130 pounds. He received the degree of Doctor of Divinity from the University of Edinburgh in 1765.
