Excerpt from The Literature of National Music The present essay is republished from The Musical Times (london: Novello, Ewer and where it appeared in the monthly numbers from July, 1878, to March, 1879. Some additions have been made in order to render it convenient as a book of reference. I shall not apologise for its republication, since it is not likely to interest any but intelligent inquirers. These, I doubt not, are convinced that, just as painters, sculptors, and architects find it useful and highly interesting to pursue the investigations of their respective arts among nations in different stages of civilisation, musicians also should take a wider view of their art than they are too apt to do. The greatest obstacle to information which the student of National Music is likely to encounter, is the difficulty in gaining access to many Of the publications bearing on the subject. Every European country ought to pos sess in its National Library not only all the collections of its own national songs and tunes, but also those Of other countries. Most of these publications are out of print, and there is no probability, except in some rare instances, of their being republished. They become daily more scarce, and soon it will be impossible to collect them together, even for a National Library. Excerpt from The National Music of America and Its Sources IN no department of musical history has there been more of careless and unverified statement, of unquestioning acceptance of tradition, than in the chronicles of our national music. The author by no means claims to have cleared up the mists which hang over some parts of the subject; he may, however, state that where conflicting tales were told, which could neither be confirmed nor disproved, he has presented both sides of the question without prejudice. The origin of Yankee Doodle, for example, has not been discovered, but it has been pointed out that many things which havebeen accepted as ascertained facts have by no means the certainty of history. A slight discursion to show the growth of the national taste in music in America, has been deemed pertinent to the subject. No apology is needed for a full presentation of the music of the Pilgrims and the Puri tans, for not only have errors crept into the popular comprehension of this important topic, but this may be regarded as the chief seed whence the early music of our country sprang. Most of the musical illustrations are drawn from early (often original) editions, in the library of the author. The answer is found in their works their music is distinguishable from all others, more by the characteristic materials than by'the spirit which animates it. But to describe these particular features in words is difficult. We can say with certainty that in their works, the melody, the tonality with the harmonic super-structures, the rhythms, are all as free as in the folk-songs them selves-a music which had existed before their age. And the fact that it is impossible to find such a freedom or any equivalent richness in the productions of those modern schools which are further removed from popular art, allows us to recognise the felicitous influence of this folk ele ment.
