The Artist has just created a new little vessel, and she has many questions about her purpose. Some of the others in the Artist's studio make fun of her for being different, but her encouraging friend the teacup reassures her of the Artist's loving plans for her. The little vessel begins to doubt these plans, however, when she must endure a very uncomfortable situation. Discover how the Artist brings her through the pain and uses the little vessel to achieve her purpose. The Little Vessel is a modern-day parable, perfect for reading to children. However, following the story are several questions designed to help the more mature reader (tweens, teens, and adults) delve deeper into God's word. Drawing parallels with the little vessel's experiences, the questions encourage consideration of how God is working in the reader's life to accomplish His will.

Why a book about a ship called Wyatt Earp? The year 2019 marked the 100th anniversary since the launch of a solid, wooden ship built in 1918-1919 in Molde, Norway. At the time she was named M/S Fanefjord (Motorskip/Motorship). She was not built as a fishing vessel, as many have claimed, but as a useful coastal trading ship--an all-rounder! Initially carrying cargo from Norway to England, and then from England to France, she was then active trading around the European coast and as far north as Greenland. There was occasionally some fishing, particularly off Greenland in the summer of 1925, which was a notable season. Fanefjord was launched on 27 September 1919. A century after her launch, on 27 September 2019, the Australian Antarctic Division joined with the Norwegian Ambassador to Australia to host a luncheon in Hobart to commemorate this amazing little ship and her many legacies. In 1933, after an uneventful career as a merchant vessel, she caught the eye of the Australian explorer, Sir Hubert Wilkins. He was searching for a suitable ship on behalf of the wealthy American Lincoln Ellsworth. Wilkins had already been part of expeditions and flights in both the Arctic and Antarctic. Ellsworth, too, had been involved in several Arctic journeys and now had grand plans for Antarctic voyages of exploration and Antarctic aviation feats never before achieved. M/S Fanefjord, named M/V Wyatt Earp (Motor Vessel) by her new owner, went on to travel as far from her home port of Ålesund as was possible, making five trips to the Antarctic, four with Lincoln Ellsworth and Hubert Wilkins between 1933 and 1939 and one for the newly formed Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition in 1948-1949. As well as commemorating the centenary of her launching in Norway, the Hobart gathering also recalled that on 24 January 1959, nearly 40 years after she was launched and 60 years before the centenary event, the ship grounded on a stormy night, on a normally warm and sunny Queensland beach, never to sail again. It was to be her grave. (From the Introduction)

Set largely on the Essex coast before the war, Matt, Guy, and their young cousin Lizzie meet up for holidays and bum around in an old boat. Guy is the eldest, handsome, skilled at everything, a tad selfish. Matt is quieter and has a crippled right arm. Lizzie adores them both, to the extent of putting up with being sea-sick everytime they go out in the old boat and continually getting bashed on the head by the sail. These are idyllic days of sun, and sea, the golden era of the thirties. Lizzie's father is a doctor and, as the thirties progress, they take the daughter of a Viennese colleague into their home, a Jewish girl called Anna, who is miserable and hates England, and misses her Jewish family and friends. The fifth child to join them is Otto, son of a German diplomat, reared in the best traditions of the Hitler doctrine and destined for the army. These five have a tense and highly involved relationship as they grow up. Anna is resented by the English boys but one of them eventually comes to love her. Otto's relationship with her is more complicated. She is, after all, a Jew. They have one wonderful day together when somehow their rivalries are forgotten as they fight the sea in the little ship, and when they all write their names on the mast. Then the world explodes into war and they all go their separate ways. They all meet again at Dunkirk. Anna getting out from France at the last moment with the help of Guy, Otto as part of the victorious Reich, and Lizzie and Matt taking the little ship over to save them from the beaches. It is strong, wonderful, atmospheric, romantic with intriguing characters, all involved with each other in love/hate relationships. It is like Judith Lennox, Susan Sallis, Rosamund Pilcher. I will get more readings done but see Judith's report, Linda also adores this writer and this book.
