When Liberius returned to Rome, a council was assembled at Rimini, in 359, at which there were present four hundred bishops, eighty of whom were Arians. In that council, which commenced favorably but terminated disastrously, the bishops, who at first had confirmed the profession of faith of the Council of Nice, and condemned and excommunicated Arsacius and Valens and their Arian accomplices, allowed themselves to be ill-treated by Constantius; and, deceived by the intrigues of the Arian bishops, they subscribed the false formula of the Council of Sirmium, which concealed the culpable intention. These bishops thus consented to the omission of the words substance and consubstantial, as the monks of St. Maur observe. Liberius, who doubtless was no longer in those circumstances in which the most upright intentions are sometimes misjudged, because ordinary men are inclined to believe that one must always submit when unfortunate--Liberius, urged by Constantine to ratify that fraudulent consent of the bishops, not only gave a flat refusal, but actually excommunicated the signing bishops, which at that time could not but make a great impression. Driven forth again from Rome, he concealed himself in the hallowed cemeteries, and remained there till the close of his life. This pontiff, and John, a Roman patrician, it is said, had a vision, afterwards confirmed by a miraculous fall of snow on the Esquiline Mount, on the 5th of August, which made known the site and the form of the church which the Mother of God desired to be built in her honor. This fourth volume in the series covers the papacies of popes 97 to 151, between the years 770 and 1048. These years included what was a very dark period in the history of the Church - the so-called Saeculum Obscurum. To put it mildly, the Throne of St. Peter was up for grabs. Papal elections were a farce; they were nothing more than a trial of strength between opposing factions in the Roman nobility and between Rome and the (German) Holy Roman Emperor. A great many unsuitable candidates ended up on that throne. They frequently scandalised Rome and the known world with their antics, both in public and in their private lives. One of them, the wildly blatant homosexual Benedict IX, was elected three times! It also included what is perhaps the most bizarre trial of all time: the posthumous exhumation, trial, ritual degradation and execution of Pope Formosus' cadaver. The period also saw a number of 'firsts': The first papal canonisation; the first German pope; the first French pope; the first humanist pope; the first papal voluntary abdication; the first pope to be assassinated; and the first papal canonisation. The period also coincides with the rise of the (German) Holy Roman Empire which came to dominate European politics in the Middle Ages and beyond, only becoming extinct in 1806. The Introductory essay in this volume charts the rise and fall of the Empire, whilst the Concluding Essay recalls one of the earliest mass popular movements in European history - The Peace and Truce of God.

Excerpt from The Lives of the Popes in the Early Middle Ages, Vol. 4 If edification were the sole, or even the principal, object which I had in view in undertaking to write the biographies of the Popes of the early Middle Ages, I might perhaps have hesitated about publishing the present series. But I wish to pursue a higher end than that of indulging in a style of historical writing which is supposed to be calculated to edify a certain type of mind. I would fulfil what I regard as a command laid upon me by the late glorious Head of the Church, and strive to make known the history of the Popes of Rome. And, as it was a cardinal maxim with Leo XIII. that truth would not injure the Church, I am convinced that he would not have had the Lives of some Popes written and the Lives of others left unrecorded, nor would he have wished to see some of their deeds blazoned forth and others buried in eternal oblivion. I know, too, that one of the greatest of the predecessors of Leo XIII. laid it down that "if scandal be taken from the enunciation of truth, it is better to allow the scandal to arise than to leave the word of truth unrecorded."
