The invention of the telescope at the dawning of the 17th century has revolutionized humanity's understanding of the Universe and our place within it. This book traces the development of the telescope over four centuries, as well as the many personalities who used it to uncover brand-new revelations about the Sun, Moon, planets, stars and distant galaxies. Starting with early observers such as Thomas Harriot, Galileo, Johannes Hevelius, Giovanni Domenico Cassini, Robert Hooke and Christian Huygens, the book explores how these early observers arrived at essentially correct ideas concerning the objects they studied. Moving into the 18th and 19th centuries, the author describes the increasing sophistication of telescopes both large and small, and the celebrated figures who used them so productively, including the Herschels, Charles Messier, William Lassell and the Earls of Rosse. Many great discoveries were also made with smaller instruments when placed in the capable hands of the Struve dynasty, F.W. Bessel, Angelo Secchi and S.W Burnham, to name but a few. Nor were all great observers of professional ilk. The book explores the contributions made by the 'clerical astronomers,' William Rutter Dawes, Thomas William Webb, T.E.R Philips and T.H.E.C Espin, as well as the lonely vigils of E.E. Barnard, William F. Denning and Charles Grover. And in the 20th century, the work of Percival Lowell, Leslie Peltier, Eugene M. Antoniadi, Clyde Tombaugh, Walter Scott Houston, David H. Levy and Sir Patrick Moore is fully explored. Generously illustrated throughout, this treasure trove of astronomical history shows how each observer's work led to seminal developments in science, and providing key insights into how we go about exploring the heavens today.

During more than four decades of involvement in amateur astronomy, I have enjoyed the privilege of rubbing shoulders with numberless amateur and professional astr- omers. In so doing I have encountered at first, second, and third hand many of the joys and pitfalls that sky watchers can experience in pursuit of the universe’s wonders. I have often howled at tall tales that would not disgrace a pirate’s tavern. Many of these astounding stories have become the kernels of my Dear Steve column items. Learning how to operate the technology for observing and imaging the universe is work enough for any aspiring astronomer; however, many have problems of their own making. Not only do they share these troubles with other astronomers, they are on the receiving end of colleagues and friends doing the same. With all these agonized communications flying about, it is hard to understand how anyone gets any real work done! For the amusement of my peers I have long fondly parodied these imagined literary exchanges. These fantasy ‘‘Agony Aunt’’ questions began appearing in the pages of the Loughton Astronomical Society’s monthly (and Christmas Special) journals about 30 years ago, in the guise of The astronomer’s problem page. This was by the kind indulgence of the then editor, namely myself. Happily, even when the magazine of the LAS evolved into something much better, under the tender and loving care of those who came after me, these problem letters were still in demand and even now occasionally appear.

Excerpt from The Science of Astronomy: Embracing Its Sublimity, History, Progress, Wonders and Utility; A Popular Lecture But dark and lonely is the eye, That turns not, at its eve, to heaven. Nothing is more grand, more awe-inspiring, than the contemplation Of the starry heavens. The study of the stars is the most ennobling within the range Of speculative science. The mind that rises to the skies seems to soar above the littleness of earthly things, and in communing with the wonders of ap parently Silent but everlastingly rolling nature, one becomes purified, elevated, and in every way nearer to the fear of God, which is the beginning Of wisdom. Concerning the sublime and inspiring as pect of astronomy, Prof. Richard A. Proctor, the eminent English astronomer, very eloquently remarks, while referring to the beauties of the starry heavens The mind cannot but be strengthened and invigor ated, it cannot but be purified and elevated, by the contemplation Of a scene so full of magnificence, im perfect though the means be by which the won ders of the scene are made known to us. The infor mation given by the telescope 1s indeed but piecemeal, and as yet no adequate attempts have been made to bring the whole array of known facts as far as pos sible into one grand picture 5 but seen as it is, only by parts, and (even so) only as though a vail and darkly, the scene presented to the astronomer is the grandest and the most awe - inspiring which man can study.
