The tall youth, turning to the right, went down a gentle slope until he came to a little stream, where he knelt and drank. Settling himself into the bushes and tall grass, until he was hidden from all but a trained gaze, he waited, body and soul alike growing steadily in vigor.

Joseph Altsheler's French and Indian War Series consists of six volumes: 1. The Hunters of the Hills This is the first volume of a series dealing with the great struggle of France and England and their colonies for dominion in North America, culminating with the fall of Quebec. It is largely concerned with the Iroquois, the mighty league known in their own language as the Hodenosaunee, for the favor of which both French and English were high bidders. Altsheler notes that he consulted many authorities, and was not conscious of any historical error. 2. The Shadow of the North -The Shadow of the North, - while an independent story, in itself, is also the second volume of the Great French and Indian War series which began with -The Hunters of the Hills.- All the important characters of the first romance reappear in the second. 3. The Rulers of the Lakes Young Robert Lennox and his friend Tayoga undertake a dangerous trip through the wilderness to warn Fort Refuge of the approach of hostile forces. The story concludes with the battle of Lake George. The book is set almost completely in the wilderness, and provides an accurate picture of Iroquois life and warfare. The Rulers of the Lakes is a complete story, but it is also the third volume of the French and Indian War Series, following The Hunters of the Hills and The Shadow of the North. Robert Lennox, Tayoga, Willet, and all the important characters in the earlier romances reappear. 4. The Masters of the Peaks -The Masters of the Peaks- is a story of the great north woods and the fourth volume of the French and Indian War Series. "They're building a fort, and they're in a hurry about it or they would not be felling trees so early in the morning." "Your reasoning about the hurry is good, Dagaeoga. The white man will not go into the forest with his ax at daybreak, unless the need of haste is great, but it is not a fort they build. Mingled with the fall of the axes I hear another note. It is a humming and a buzzing. It is heard in these forests much less often than the thud of the ax. Ah! I was in doubt at first, but I know it now! The remaining nineteen novels can be read in any order. [Note, however, that A Knight of Philadelphia was later expanded through the addition of nineteen chapters and some minor tweaks to become Mr. Altsheler's novel In Hostile Red.]The short stories, of course, can be read in any order. However, some readers might prefer to read them in the order in which they were published. The short story list below is displayed in chronological order with the publication dates shown alongside the titles.Early life and educationAltsheler was born in Three Springs, Hart County, Kentucky, to Joseph and Louise (née Snoddy) Altsheler. He attended Liberty College in Glasgow, Kentucky, before entering Vanderbilt University.CareerIn 1885, he took a job at the Louisville Courier-Journal as a reporter and later worked as an editor. He started working for the New York World in 1892, first as the paper's Hawaiian correspondent and then as the editor of the World's tri-weekly magazine. Due to a lack of suitable stories, he began writing children's stories for the magazine.Personal lifeAltsheler married Sarah Boles on May 30, 1888; they had one son, Sidney.Altsheler and his family were in Germany in 1914 when World War I began, and they were forced to remain in Germany for a time. The hardships the Altshelers endured in returning to the U.S. damaged Altsheler's health and rendered him a semi-invalid until his death. Upon returning to the U.S., he wrote The World War Series of books based on his ordeal.DeathAltsheler died in New York City on June 5, 1919, aged 57; his obituary appeared in The Evening World, on June 6, 1919. His widow, Sarah, died 30 years later. Both are buried at the Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky.
